Mäetaguse offers two distinct focuses for planning your trip: the historic manor and leisure opportunities in the recreation area and park. You can explore the manor’s history, plan outdoor activities, or combine the two. This lets you shape your stay around culture, outdoor activities and the landscape.

Mäetaguse Manor and its historic surroundings

Mäetaguse Manor was first mentioned in 1542; today, the manor complex comprises 14 buildings. The Neo-Gothic burial chapel of the von Rosen family stands on a high hill, 1 kilometre northwest of the manor. Its architectural style and connection to the von Rosen family give this place a distinct cultural and historical significance.

The Jäägri Museum is housed in the former gardener’s house within the manor complex. The museum and burial chapel are therefore in different locations: the museum is part of the complex, while the chapel stands northwest of the manor. This distinction is useful when finding your way around the manor heritage sites, without treating the two places as a single point of interest.

Activities in the recreation area and park

The municipal development plan adopted in 2021 lists walking, Nordic walking, running, cycling, inline skating and skateboarding in the Mäetaguse recreation area. The range therefore extends from activities on foot to wheeled sports. The plan also mentions skiing in winter; conditions and maintenance can vary. Check the condition of the facilities before your trip. It also lists a skate park next to the Mäetaguse school building and a beach volleyball court for summer.

The outdoor fitness area in Mäetaguse Manor Park has four different exercise machines. An enclosed court can be used for basketball or tennis. There is also a children’s obstacle course with various low climbing elements that can be used without safety equipment. The same park therefore offers different forms of activity: exercising on machines, ball games and climbing.

Mäetaguse Disc Golf Park has 18 baskets. Its hills offer views that are especially appealing at sunset. Distinct from these is the landform of Mäetaguse Bog: in places, it forms a winding ridge up to 15 metres high, with steep slopes. For a guided activity, the Alutaguse Hiking Club also offers walks and day hikes in Mäetaguse Bog. They are available in different lengths and difficulty levels. This lets you consider two different things: the fixed number of disc golf baskets and the varying length and difficulty of the guided tours.
