Narva can be explored through three distinct themes: the history of Hermann Castle, the paths along the riverfront and Kreenholm’s industrial heritage. The Town Hall and Art Gallery also offer their own historical and cultural perspectives on the city.

Hermann Castle and its exhibitions

Hermann Castle in Narva is more than 700 years old. It acquired its present appearance during the time of the Livonian Order, from the 14th to the 16th century. The castle covers 3.2 hectares; its highest point is the 51-metre-tall tower, Tall Hermann. From there, the view stretches across Narva, the Kreenholm factory and Ivangorod Fortress across the river in Russia.

The castle’s permanent exhibition explores its history, from the arrival of the first Danes on the banks of the Narva River to the present day. The casemates of the Victoria Bastion offer guided tours, escape games and other programmes. The tours explain Narva’s historic defence system. Advance booking for the casemates is required by phone or email; check the details before your visit.

Kreenholm: Industrial History and Waterfalls

The Narva Museum’s Kreenholm excursions offer an insight into more than 160 years of factory history amid monumental industrial architecture. The museum offers them by reservation and on Sundays at 12 noon from April to the end of October. As seasonal arrangements may change, check the date in advance.

The Narva cascades are located on the grounds of the decommissioned Kreenholm Manufactory. The hydroelectric power station usually releases water from its reservoir to the cascades during the spring flood. The Narva Museum runs trips to the waterfalls; availability may vary by season. Another way to discover Kreenholm is the free QR walking tour through the district’s historic streets. Using QR codes, it tells the story of the area.

River Promenade and Joaorg

The Narva River Promenade, about one kilometre long, lies in the historic centre along the riverbank. It is bordered to the east by the Narva River, to the west by the bastion walls and Hermann Castle, to the north by Narva Harbour and to the south by the Joaorg recreation area. As a starting point for a city visit, it provides a sense of direction between these prominent landmarks. Narva’s sights are within easy walking distance of one another.

The promenade’s Sun Square features a fountain, a sundial and a summer café; the café is a seasonal offering. The Swedish Terrace is a family recreation area with lion-shaped attractions for children. At the Joaorg recreation area, the bike rental service offers city bikes, mountain bikes, fat bikes, tandems, children’s bikes and scooters. Availability may change.

Town Hall and Art Gallery

Narva Town Hall dates from the 17th century and brings together German, Swedish and Italian architectural influences. Guided tours include historic offices and event rooms; the guide also talks about the city’s history and legends.

The Narva Museum’s Art Gallery is located on Gloria Bastion in a former granary built in 1777. Its permanent exhibition, “Elu või karma? Narva lood”, features almost 200 works spanning the Baroque period to the present day. The presentation may change. Gallery tours include both the permanent and temporary exhibitions.
