Accommodation in Avinurme
Avinurme combines local crafts with cultural and historical themes that shape different kinds of trips. Local craftspeople work at the Avinurme Woodworking Centre, while workshops and the Avinurme Tünnilaat offer further highlights. The church, two memorial sites, and the history of the narrow-gauge railway provide additional perspectives on the town. If you are looking for a hotel, you can plan your trip around these highlights—from crafts and culture to historic memorial sites.
Crafts and culture in Avinurme
The Avinurme Woodworking Centre is a tourism centre where local craftspeople work. The centre runs workshops, including basket weaving, felting, and bread baking. In this way, it brings together the work of local craftspeople and a programme of hands-on activities: crafts are at the heart of the centre both through the place where the work takes place and through individual workshop topics. Bread baking adds a culinary aspect to weaving and felting.
The café at the Avinurme Woodworking Centre serves homemade cakes and pastries, fresh bread, and other treats. If you would like to stop there, check in advance whether the café will be open during your visit.
The Avinurme Tünnilaat brings together a traditional Midsummer market, local cultural heritage, craft skills, and a contemporary cultural programme. Unlike the individual workshop topics, it combines a market, crafts, and culture as part of a festival. If you would like to plan a trip around this event, check the specific event dates in advance.
Church, memorial sites, and railway history
Avinurme Church dates from 1906 to 1909. A black granite memorial stone was erected beside the church in 2004. Its inscription reads: “Au langenuile! Avinurme 20.09.1944”.
The Avinurme Battle Memorial in the cemetery was opened on 20 September 2009. The remains of 25 fallen Estonian soldiers were reburied there. Together with the memorial stone beside the church, it offers another historical point of interest, encompassing both an inscription and the history of a cemetery memorial.
The town’s history also includes the narrow-gauge Sonda–Mustvee railway, which ran through Avinurme from 1926 to 1972. Another railway attraction is the Avinurme museum train, which offers nostalgic train rides from May to October, weather permitting.
Plan seasonal experiences
There are several types of visits to choose from: the Woodworking Centre’s workshops, the Tünnilaat’s cultural programme, and the train rides offered by the museum train. The train rides run from May to October and are weather-dependent; check in advance whether a ride is available on the day of your visit. This will help you decide whether to focus your trip on crafts, a market with a cultural programme, or a potential railway excursion.
