Zlobice: Cultural History and Orientation
Accommodation in Zlobice
You can get your bearings in Zlobice by looking at its road directions and the different layers of its local history. If you’re looking for a hotel, this perspective on both can help: it shows how the town relates to the directions mentioned and also highlights the cultural and historical themes that may shape a stay. These include the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, other religious monuments, archaeological finds, and a historic theatrical tradition.
Location and Orientation
The main road runs from Kroměříž through Zlobice toward Věžky and on to Morkovice. A cross street runs through the town toward Popovice. These details give you two different road directions to consider when including Zlobice as an overnight stop in your travel plans.
Most of the built-up area lies on gently sloping terrain in the Litenčické Hills. The Věžecký potok stream flows through the built-up area and has several right-bank tributaries. The southwestern part of the municipal area lies within the Troják Site of European Importance, a specially protected area. The terrain and stream thus relate to the built-up part of the town, while the protected area covers part of the larger municipal territory.
Church and Religious Monuments
The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius stands in Zlobice and was built between 1897 and 1899 to a design by architect Leodegard Slovák of Kroměříž. The associated rectory is one of Zlobice’s landmarks. The church and rectory thus form a closely connected point of reference in the town’s history.
Several stone crosses and other small religious monuments are located within the municipal area. Zlobice is also home to a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes and a wooden cross. The religious heritage therefore ranges from the dated church building to smaller monuments and religious symbols in the town and across the municipal area.
Archaeology, Theatre, and Local History
Archaeological finds show that the municipal area of Zlobice was already inhabited in the Neolithic, Bronze Age, and Iron Age. One specific example comes from Hliník, where a vessel from the Lusatian culture was uncovered at a depth of about one metre. The archaeological record thus spans a broad settlement history across several periods, as well as a named individual find.
The Ferdyšova Theatre Company was founded in 1989 in Bojanovice to preserve rural traditions. It developed a village theatre and staged numerous plays and fairy tales at the inn in Bojanovice, using original or adapted scripts. This example complements the buildings and archaeological finds with a form of cultural life focused on theatrical work and preserving traditions.
Alongside the rectory, the Solanský Mill had been in operation since 1916; it had a small power plant. The mill adds a historical reference to local technology to the ecclesiastical setting. On Větrák Hill, which separates Bojanovice from Zlobice, stands a monument to the fallen of the First World War, erected in 1920. It is topped by a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. At this site, the monument’s dedication and the statue bring together memories of war and religion.
