Střížovice: Nature, Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Střížovice
Střížovice lies on the right bank of the March, at the transition between the Upper Morava Valley and the Chřiby Hills. From here, there are views of the nearby Chřiby Hills. Three themes help visitors get their bearings: nature and area protection, routes for different activities, and local monuments with a range of historical connections. Anyone looking for a hotel for their stay can use these features to decide which aspect of the village is of particular interest.
Nature and Protected Areas
Bašnov is a protected natural monument in the cadastral area of Střížovice u Kvasic. It lies about 0.3 km south-southeast of Střížovice, in a shallow depression in the March floodplain. The fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina), a species of European importance, and its habitat are protected here. The location in the depression and the protection of the animal and its habitat describe two aspects of this natural area: its landscape and its importance as a habitat.
The Střížovice Site of Community Importance lies about 0.7 km southeast of Střížovice, on the left-hand side of the road from Střížovice to Kvasice. It is part of the Natura 2000 network. The location details and protection designations help distinguish this site from Bašnov: they are two different protected areas, each with its own location and classification.
Hiking and Cycling
The Stezky severními Chřiby trail network includes information boards with maps, historical details and information about local sights. There are also tourist signposts, viewpoints and benches. The route guidance is therefore complemented by information about history and local attractions; viewpoints and benches are also part of the network's described facilities.
The trail network is primarily intended for hiking. Most routes can also be ridden by mountain bike and are also suitable for running or Nordic walking. This distinction is useful when planning: hiking is the main focus, while mountain biking is mentioned for most routes, not necessarily all of them. Running and Nordic walking are further options provided for.
A 12 km hiking trail starts in Střížovice. This specific distance adds a measurable reference point for planning a hike to the general description of the trail network.
For cyclists, the section of the cycle route between Kroměříž, Střížovice and Kvasice is also relevant: it is part of the EuroVelo 9 system. This places Střížovice on a named cycling connection between the three locations. The information about the trail network and the EuroVelo section has different focuses: the former covers several activities and routes, while the latter identifies a cycle route section as part of a wider system.
Monuments and Local History
A monument in front of the municipal office commemorates the people of Střížovice who fell in the First World War. It was erected in 1921. Its dedication connects the memorial with the history of the community, while the year dates its construction.
Kříž na Hrázi is a sandstone cross with a crucifix and corpus on a pedestal. The cross depicts the body of the tortured Christ and bears the inscription INRI. The site also plays a role in a local custom: during the procession through the village, the Hrkači stopped here to pray. The cross's design, religious imagery and role as a prayer stop give it a range of historical and cultural connections.
The statue of Saint Florian stands in the village square of Střížovice. It is 276 cm high overall and is believed to be a Baroque monument. As a protected object, it is listed in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments under number 34454/7–6157. Together with the war memorial and the sandstone cross, it represents different forms of local remembrance and religious cultural heritage.
