Kostelany: Forests, Horse Riding and Historic Monuments
Accommodation in Kostelany
Kostelany lies on the northeastern edge of the Chřiby Mountains and is surrounded by forests on three sides. To the northeast, the landscape opens up; from Kostelany, the view extends as far as Hostýn. When looking for a hotel in Kostelany, consider whether you want to focus your stay on nature, a guided horse-riding experience or historic monuments.
Nature and trails around Kostelany
The Chřiby forests in Kostelany offer opportunities for walks and more challenging hikes. These two options offer different ways to spend time outdoors: a walk and a more challenging hike involve different levels of activity. If you want to include nature in your plans, you can start by choosing the type of outing that suits you. The view of Hostýn is also part of the landscape, made possible by the open terrain to the northeast. The forest and the view are two distinct features of the surrounding area.
The Kolem Kostelan trail starts at the bus stop in Kostelany. This gives you a specific reference point for planning your route; check the local signs before setting off, as they may change.
Guided horse riding
Ranč Kostelany offers rides into the countryside around the ranch, accompanied by an experienced instructor. This distinguishes the horse-riding experience from walks and hikes: the ride takes place under guidance. For children aged three to eight, the ranch offers instruction with an instructor in riding, as well as grooming, saddling and leading horses. The availability and booking terms for rides, as well as programme availability and age requirements for children, may change; check these details with the ranch before making plans.
Historic monuments
The sandstone reconciliation cross
The sandstone reconciliation cross is considered the oldest surviving monument in Kostelany; it is thought to date from the first half of the 17th century. It stands in the forest below Kameňák, beside Klimešova studánka and above the Kudlovický potok stream. These three named landmarks locate the cross in the landscape and connect its description with a hill, a spring and a stream.
The T. G. Masaryk monument
The T. G. Masaryk monument stands in a small park in the upper part of Kostelany. It was made and unveiled in 1938; following its restoration, it was ceremonially unveiled again on 26 August 1945. Residents of Kostelany saved the damaged statue after the Nazis ordered its removal. The two monuments thus represent distinct forms of cultural heritage: the cross’s dating is uncertain, while the Masaryk monument’s story is shaped by a specific sequence of its unveiling, preservation and unveiling once more.
The locations of the two monuments are also different: the reconciliation cross stands in the forest below Kameňák, while the Masaryk monument is in a small park in the upper part of Kostelany.
