Discover Zdounky: Castle, Church and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Zdounky
Zdounky brings together several themes that are easy to distinguish when planning a trip: the castle’s architecture, the history of the Church of the Holy Trinity, and tourist routes with different focuses. Those looking for a hotel in Zdounky can therefore explore the town through its culture, hiking opportunities, and landscape. The buildings provide historical highlights, while the routes pass through several municipalities or offer views of distinctive landscapes. The Kamenec Natural Monument adds a nature-focused aspect. To find your way around, it is worth looking at the specific differences: the castle and church are notable for their architecture and history, while the trails are distinguished by their use, route details, and views.
Zdounky Castle: Architectural Design and Vaults
Zdounky Castle is a four-winged building. At its southwestern corner, the former tower of the original fortress projects outward. This preserves a visible element of the older fortification in the building’s design. The rooms throughout the entire ground floor have Baroque vaulted ceilings. The oldest, southern section also retains an original chapel with a Renaissance vault. The types of vaults differ both in their period and location: Baroque ceilings define the ground floor, while the Renaissance vault belongs to the chapel in the oldest southern section. The castle is listed as an immovable cultural monument under registration number 37881/7-6188.
Church of the Holy Trinity: History and Tombstone
The Church of the Holy Trinity in Zdounky stands on a steep slope near the town center, within an enclosed precinct. Originally Gothic, it was first mentioned in 1366. This should be distinguished from the later alteration to the tower, which was extended in 1570. The dates therefore refer to two different details: 1366 is the church’s first recorded mention, while 1570 is the year the church tower was extended. The church also features a figurative and heraldic Renaissance stone tombstone for Jan Jiří Zoubek ze Zdětína. The work is considered a unique example in Moravia.
Hiking Routes and Views
The local tourist trail network Stezky severními Chřiby connects Kroměříž, Zdounky, Kostelany, Kvasice, and municipalities within this area. The trails are primarily intended for hiking; most are also suitable for mountain biking. Hiking is therefore the clear focus, while mountain biking is mentioned as an option for the majority, not necessarily every route. A 13.6 km route passes through Zdounky, Nětčice, Šelešovice, and Soběsuky. Another route crosses two ridges and offers sweeping views of Kroměříž and its surroundings, the Hostýnské vrchy, and especially the Chřiby. The stated distance and list of places give a concrete impression of the route, while the views provide additional geographic orientation through the named landscapes.
Kamenec Natural Monument
The Kamenec Natural Monument features warm slopes with juniper stands and thermophilous flora. Numerous thermophilous insect species live in the natural monument and its surroundings; the presence of the protected praying mantis is particularly noteworthy. Alongside the buildings, this adds a nature-focused highlight with specific habitats and a protected species.
