Cetechovice – Between Chřiby and Marble Heritage
Accommodation in Cetechovice
Cetechovice lies in the heart of the Chřiby Mountains. Springs, distinctive landforms and traces of former marble quarrying shape the town and its surroundings. There are also buildings that reveal different chapters of the town’s history. When planning a stay, Cetechovice therefore offers both natural features and specific cultural and historical sights to visit.
Landscape and Springs in the Chřiby
Mount Brdo rises above Cetechovice to a height of 587 metres. Also above the town lies Studýnka Panny Marie, a spring on the western slope of Mount Pláňava. Mořské oko, a natural formation, is located below the spring. These named places give the landscape clear points of reference: Brdo represents the heights, while the spring and the formation offer a different perspective on the surroundings.
A trail runs along the ridge of the surrounding Chřiby Mountains, separating the Cetechovice Forest from the Buchlov Forest. This setting among named mountains and forests also makes the landscape interesting for visitors who do not want to focus their stay solely on buildings. Treat the trails and viewpoints as destinations in their own right, rather than assuming there is a specific connection between them.
Marble: Geological Traces and Local History
At Mramůrka, about 800 metres southeast of Cetechovice, there is a piece of Jurassic seabed: limestone that was transformed into marble around 120 million years ago. The timescale of its geological formation is very different from the more recent history of quarrying. Three former marble quarries lie southeast of Cetechovice at the foot of the 561-metre-high Mount Vlčák. Access can be difficult; take this into account when planning your visit.
The local rock formation Mramůrka is also associated with the former marble quarrying in Cetechovice. The stone was also used beyond the town: marble from Cetechovice was used for the portals and all the door surrounds at Kroměříž Castle. It was also used for some of the altars in Olomouc Cathedral and the Church of St. James in Brno. This makes it possible to consider the local history of quarrying alongside the use of the stone in several important buildings.
Church, Castle and Landmarks in the Town Centre
The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Cetechovice dates from the late Middle Ages and was altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. Inside the church is a tombstone for Jan Kokorský z Kokor, who died in 1559. The church’s long construction history and this tombstone belong to different historical layers of the town.
Cetechovice Castle is Baroque. It is a simple rectangular building with a small courtyard and a monumental-looking portal. Its layout consists of four wings around an irregular courtyard, topped by a mansard roof. The description of the building thus combines a plain overall form with details that reveal themselves only on closer inspection.
There is also a stone crucifix dating from 1753 in the centre of Cetechovice. On the village square, near the castle, stands a statue of St. John of Nepomuk dating from around the turn of the 19th century. Together with the church and castle, these works provide several clearly identifiable points of interest in the town centre, without requiring any single building to tell the whole story of the town.
Walking Trails and Visit Planning
The route “Z Cetechovic přes Vlčák na Gavendovu skálu” (From Cetechovice via Vlčák to Gavendova skála) starts in Cetechovice and follows a blue-marked hiking trail. A side path leads to the forest spring Pod Mramůrkou, where simple wooden seating has been installed. As facilities along the trail may change, check before your visit whether the seating is still there.
The rock formation Gavendova skála is rugged, very steep in places and dangerous; terrain conditions may vary. Take this description seriously when planning your visit, and distinguish the rock site from the easier-to-assess buildings in the town centre. The range of sights extends from springs and landscapes to geological and industrial traces, architecture and small monuments. Which of these aspects interests you most may determine what you choose to focus on during a stay in Cetechovice.
