Vysoké Studnice: Church, Cemetery and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Vysoké Studnice
The religious complex, with the Church of the Holy Trinity and the cemetery, occupies a prominent position above Vysoké Studnice. Together with the pilgrimage to the Holy Trinity, the church and cemetery shape the village’s cultural centre. For your trip planning, the site brings together tangible architectural history and cemetery architecture with two different ways of getting there: by road and by bus. Which aspect matters most to you depends on whether you are primarily exploring the architectural features or planning your journey around a particular day of the week.
Church and Cultural Heritage
The Church of the Holy Trinity is a single-nave, aligned Late Renaissance building dating from 1605. “Single-nave” describes a building with one main nave; the presbytery, or choir, ends in a polygonal, meaning multi-angled, shape. The church was consecrated to the Holy Trinity in 1665; this date refers to the consecration, not the year of construction. Alterations took place in the third quarter of the 17th century, at the beginning of the 18th century and in 1888; repairs followed in 1998 and 2007.
The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk is listed as protected cultural heritage. It has been protected since 4 January 1973; its register number is 29619/7-5411.
Cemetery and Architectural Features
The cemetery around the church was established in 1720. Its three chapels have square floor plans and hipped roofs covered with wooden shingles. A square floor plan describes the shape of the area at ground level, while a hipped roof describes the roof shape, which slopes upwards; the wooden shingles identify the roofing material. The pedestrian entrance is at the cemetery’s southwestern corner; the vehicle entrance is approximately halfway along the eastern boundary wall.
The architectural styles can also be compared: at the church, the polygonal end of the presbytery shapes the building’s profile, while at the chapels, the square floor plan and tent-shaped roof take centre stage.
Access and Pilgrimage
The church tower offers far-reaching views over the surrounding area. The tower is not regularly open to the public; however, arrangements can be made to borrow a key. If you are planning to take in the view, arrange the key handover locally before your visit.
A pilgrimage to the Holy Trinity takes place at the parish church. If this tradition is important to your trip, ask the parish in advance about dates and the programme. This will let you plan your trip around the scheduled pilgrimage.
Plan Your Journey
Vysoké Studnice is 10 km east of Jihlava on the old road to Brno. Road access is considered good even in winter, although road conditions may vary. For bus travellers, the day of the week is the key factor to compare: an older municipal description of the village notes that there is an adequate bus connection to Vysoké Studnice on weekdays, but only a few buses at weekends. This older profile is therefore useful as a rough guide, not as a timetable for your stay. Check the current connection for your travel date before setting off, especially if you are travelling at the weekend.
