Krasonice brings together architectural history, a named hiking trail and nearby landscape attractions. This gives you two main ways to plan your visit: you can focus on historic buildings or include the Březina Trail and the landscape of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands in your plans. If you are looking for hotels in Krasonice, it helps to decide in advance whether you mainly want to explore the town’s history or set aside time for a longer hike.

Castle history in the town centre

Krasonice Castle is in the town centre, near the Church of St Lawrence. It probably stands on the site of an earlier fortress mentioned in sources dating from 1353. In 1630, the former fortress was converted into a single-storey late Renaissance castle. The building includes an irregular courtyard and ground-floor arcades. Together with its single-storey layout, these details give a concrete picture of the castle complex. The castle is privately owned. If you are considering a visit, please check access in advance.

Church and chapel: different periods of construction

The Church of St Lawrence is documented as early as 1311. It acquired its present-day Baroque appearance around 1771. The two dates mark distinct stages: the church’s early documented history and the much later development of its current form. A large painting of St Lawrence hangs above the marble main altar. This building brings together the town’s long history, Baroque design and a specific decorative feature.

The Chapel of the Virgin Mary on Humberk offers a different historical and architectural perspective. It was built in 1664 in gratitude for the healing of Karel Maximilián Thurn’s diseased eyes. The chapel is a Neo-Gothic building with stained-glass windows. Its slender tower is 22 metres high, and it has three harmonised bells. The windows and the tall tower describe different features of the chapel, while the year it was built gives it its own historical context.

The statue of St John of Nepomuk is another dated landmark in Krasonice: it was blessed on 18 June 1720. Together, the church and chapel offer an overview of several centuries of local architectural and religious history, without reducing the three sites to the same period or architectural style.

The Březina Trail and the landscape

The Březina Trail passes through Krasonice and connects places associated with the poet Otokar Březina. It is 55 to 60 kilometres long in total. The route follows roads, farm tracks and footpaths; the climbs are considered not particularly demanding, though conditions can vary from person to person. Its length is a separate factor to consider alongside a visit to the town centre. So think in advance about how much time you want to set aside for the hike. As local route conditions can change, it is worth checking them before setting out.

The landscape of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands around Krasonice is ideal for hiking and cycling. Maškův mlýn, near Krasonice on the Želetavka River, offers another glimpse of the local landscape. A pond and weir are located next to the mill. In the past, the mill had its own sawmill and lime works. The pond and weir reflect the area’s waterside landscape, while the sawmill and lime works add a picture of the mill’s former industrial use. This gives the site a different focus from the castle’s history and the religious buildings.
