Hladov lies in a shallow valley at the upper course of the Hladovský potok stream, in the central part of the Brtnická vrchovina landscape. Hladovský rybník pond lies on the eastern edge of Hladov. The history of the village and its buildings includes the Chapel of the Holy Family of Nazareth, as well as historic ties to Nová Říše. For travelers who consider both landscape and history when choosing a destination, Hladov offers several thematic ways to explore the area.

Valley, waterways and upland plateau

The source section of the Hladovský potok stream, together with Hladovský rybník pond, reaches into an upland plateau landscape. This brings together the valley at the stream’s upper course and the plateau setting, while the pond lies on the eastern edge of the village. To the west of Hladov, the significant landscape feature Nad Hladovským rybníkem is registered. Larger areas of woodland lie within Hladov’s cadastral area, particularly around Veselský vrch. The stream, pond, plateau and surrounding woodland offer different perspectives on the natural landscape. The contrast between the shallow valley and its connection to the plateau is a distinctive feature of the area.

Road connection and cycling route

The I/38 Class I road runs through Hladov and leads from Jihlava to Znojmo. The cycling route 5092 follows a different alignment: it runs along the edge of Hladov’s cadastral area and leads from Hodice to Stará Říše. The two routes therefore differ both in where they run and in their stated endpoints. This distinction is useful for planning your trip: Jihlava and Znojmo identify the connection via the I/38, while Hodice and Stará Říše mark the cycling route 5092.

Chapel and crosses

The Chapel of the Holy Family of Nazareth in Hladov is Neo-Gothic. Its plans were drawn up by Professors Welzl and Dvořák of the industrial school in Brno. The architectural style and the named attribution of the design offer two distinct ways to explore the building’s history. The chapel received a new bell, which was consecrated on August 31, 2008. Thus, the architectural design and a dated event in religious life stand side by side. There are also five crosses in Hladov and its surroundings, including the cross of Jan Veselý, a legionnaire. Its association with a named person provides this cross with a specific historical point of reference within the group.

Historical ties to Nová Říše

The history of the village also leads to Nová Říše: Hladov paid tithes to the local Premonstratensian monastery. Another connection to the monastery appears in the history of brewing. At the edge of Hladov, Novoříšské Klášterní pivo was brewed at a brewery using a recipe attributed to the monastery’s monks; the first batch was sampled. The two accounts relate to different subjects: the tithe describes a payment, while the beer’s specific points of reference are its place of brewing, the recipe’s attribution and the first tasting. For those interested in local history, this adds an economic and culinary connection beyond the village, alongside the chapel and crosses.
