Discover Kaliště U Horních Dubenek: Nature and History
Accommodation in Kaliště U Horních Dubenek
Ptačí park Jihlávka is being established between Jihlávka, Horní Dubenky, Kaliště and Býkovec. It extends from Bor Pond to Býkovecký Pond. The regionally significant Rašeliniště Kaliště nature reserve is also part of it. The project thus encompasses named bodies of water and a protected area within a landscape that stretches across several localities.
Wildlife watching in Ptačí park Jihlávka
Snipe, lapwing and stonechat can be spotted in the park. Sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed, so don’t plan on them as a definite experience. The park can be viewed easily from the roadside at its southernmost point, “u křížku.” As the nature restoration project continues to develop in 2026 and visiting conditions may change, check them before your visit.
Chapel and local history in Býkovec
The chapel in Býkovec is dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the patronage title “Mediatrix of All Graces.” It was built from September 21 to November 30, 2009; final building approval was granted on December 9, 2010. About 250 people attended the consecration. Students and teachers from ZUŠ Jihlava provided music for the celebration. Final building approval was granted in December 2010, just over a year after construction was completed.
Býkovec’s origins are traced to a fortress with a manor farm built by a nobleman. The former manorial mill is also part of the local history: it was later equipped with a fulling mill for the spinning mill of the Tomáš Novotný company. The fortress, mill and chapel represent different historical themes, from early origins and commercial use to more recent religious history.
Routes and local customs
The green-marked Litohošť–Sosnový les bridleway runs through Býkovec. The 92 kilometres refer to the total route length; individual sections of the bridleway run over fields and grassy tracks. As a distinct aspect of local life, Býkovec’s Easter customs include men, young men and boys going from house to house in a large group.
A specifically dated event was the Shrovetide parade on February 14, 2026: a colourful procession of 65 imaginatively designed costumes passed through Býkovec. Those who include wildlife watching, routes and local history in their travel plans will find a range of topics here, each with its own connection to the named places.
