Discover Brtnice: Castle, Bridge and Trails
Accommodation in Brtnice
Brtnice brings together several themes that you can give different emphasis during your stay: architecture, sacred history and hiking trails. Cultural landmarks include Brtnice Castle, the Židovský (Dolní) Bridge, the churches of sv. Jakuba Většího and blahoslavené Juliány Collalto, and the Muzeum Josefa Hoffmanna. The Brtnická Trail combines the exploration of natural beauty with historic monuments. You can shape your plans around architecture, art or a hiking stage.
Castle, Hall and Bridge
Brtnice Castle is one of the notable aristocratic residences in Moravia. The so-called Sál vjezdů is decorated with stucco from the 1730s and contains a valuable, unique cycle of eleven hanging paintings by the painter Töpper. The hall draws attention to a specific art-historical aspect of the castle: as well as its significance as an aristocratic residence, the decorative features of a single room are part of Brtnice’s cultural profile.
The Židovský (Dolní) Bridge is a Baroque stone bridge with six art-historically valuable statues of saints by local sculptor D. Lipart. The view of the castle from the bridge is sometimes called Brtnické Hradčany. The castle and bridge thus represent different aspects of the cultural heritage: the decoration of a hall on the one hand, and the interplay of bridge architecture, statues and views of the castle on the other.
Sacred Art and Historic Sites
The parish church of sv. Jakuba Většího houses a richly decorated copper Renaissance baptismal font shaped like an apple on a branch. Its material, period and distinctive form make the font a specific example of sacred art. The oldest preserved gravestone in Brtnice’s Jewish cemetery dates from 1672, providing a dated point of reference in the town’s history.
The Paulánský klášter was built between 1639 and 1644 and is accessible only from the outside. At the church of blahoslavené Juliány Collalto, the church and its tower are accessible during events and services, as well as by prior arrangement with the parish office. If you plan a visit by arrangement, contact the parish office in advance; access arrangements may change.
Josef Hoffmann and Seasonal Exhibitions
The Muzeum Josefa Hoffmanna is located in Brtnice. The architect and designer Josef Hoffmann was born in his birthplace in Brtnice. The exhibition is visited not only by specialists but also by the general public. The museum holds seasonal exhibitions every year; specific titles and dates may change. If a particular exhibition is the reason for your trip, check the relevant dates in advance.
Circular Walk or Hiking Stage
The circular walk through Brtnice on the Brtnická Trail is 2,700 m long. The trail connects to a network of cycling routes and walking paths. For a different itinerary, you can consider the section from the Rokštejn ruins to Brtnice: it can be walked along a blue-marked hiking trail and is about 7.5 km long. The two distances refer to different routes—a circular walk through Brtnice and a section from the ruins to Brtnice. This lets you distinguish a shorter walk around the town from a longer hiking stage.
