Discover Slatina Pod Hazmburkem
Accommodation in Slatina Pod Hazmburkem
Slatina Pod Hazmburkem lies at the eastern foot of the Házmburk castle ruins, between the floodplains of the Podsedický potok and the Rosovka. The village’s appearance combines a historic centre with the surrounding landscape. This creates a clear thematic contrast when choosing a travel destination: architectural history and settlement patterns shape the view in the village, while the castle and natural surroundings appeal to other, different interests.
Village character and protected heritage zone
The historic village centre was declared a protected heritage zone in 1995 because of its 32 original structures. These include barns, boundary walls and gates, which are typical of a Czech circular village. The original stone houses stand in a flattened circle and form a round village square. The protected status therefore covers more than one prominent building: it highlights the village’s cohesive layout and several types of structure. If you are interested in traditional village layouts, the circular square and the architectural details are two aspects of the same village character.
Church and early local history
An originally Gothic church has stood in Slatina since the end of the 12th century. Its Renaissance tower was built in 1595; the ground floor contains a stone portal with an inscription about the church’s Renaissance extension. After a reconstruction in 1746, the church was rededicated to Saint John of Nepomuk. The inscription links the tower to the Renaissance extension, while the rededication marks a later stage. The first written mentions of Slatina date from 1056, predating the church at the end of the 12th century.
Házmburk Castle and the landscape
Nearby, Házmburk Castle offers a self-guided walk through its outdoor areas. From the castle hill, views extend across the České středohoří and the Bohemian Uplands. Unlike the village centre, whose distinctive features lie in its architectural forms and their history, the castle is associated with views across the landscape. This brings two different focal points together: Slatina’s built heritage and the castle with its hilltop views.
Vrch Hazmburk protected area
The Vrch Hazmburk natural monument also includes areas within Slatina. The protected area around the castle contains exposed basalt outcrops and scree slopes. Steppe and forest-steppe habitats, along with orchards under extensive cultivation, cover about 60 percent of the area. The landscape thus combines geological formations with different habitats. Species of European importance preserved in the area include the grasshopper Stenobothrus eurasius and the Jersey tiger moth (Euplagia quadripunctaria). These natural features add a distinct focus to the historic buildings.
