Snědovice combines a traditionally agricultural landscape with a rich architectural history. The castle, mill and chapels represent different eras and styles; the park and rural homes complete the picture. A family-friendly educational trail and historical connections to the area offer further ways to plan a stay around your own interests.

Baroque Castle and Park

Jan Baltazar Clary ze Sperberbach had a new Baroque castle built in Snědovice to replace the ruined fortress; it was completed around 1688. The one- and two-storey building has an inner courtyard. Tall pilasters define the castle façade; other features include a rusticated stone gate and windows with triangular and segmental pediments. Today, the castle houses a social care institution.

A small English-style park was laid out beside the castle in the first half of the 19th century. Stone walls that divide individual terraces or lawns have been preserved in the castle park, along with individual specimen trees in front of the castle. The difference in timing makes the distinct phases of development clear: the castle was completed around 1688, while the park was created more than a century later.

Mill and Chapel

The Renaissance Velký mlýn (Great Mill) was built after 1555. It preserves an art-historically valuable commemorative plaque bearing a wolf leaping out of a forest as its coat-of-arms motif. The Czech inscription reads “Waclaw z Quitkowa, Mandalena z Hrussova 1555”. The mill building and plaque thus point to different historical details: the Renaissance building, and the names and image on the commemorative plaque.

The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary stands in the centre of Snědovice. Its rounded corners, round-arched entrance and circular window in the gable, topped with a bell-shaped feature, give the building a clearly defined architectural profile. Together with the castle and mill, the chapel illustrates the variety of historical architectural styles in the village.

Rural Architecture

Characteristic examples can also be found beyond the castle architecture: in Střížovice, a district of the municipality of Snědovice, there is a protected rural home dating from 1870 and built in the folk architecture style. The large, well-preserved building dates from the second half of the 19th century and is unusually richly decorated. Its features include late Classicist elements of rural architecture.

The preserved cultural monuments in Snědovice also include wooden log houses numbered 46 and 56, as well as houses designated če. 7, 14 and 17, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. These buildings complement the castle and chapel architecture with rural housing forms from several centuries.

Landscape and Historical Connections

Snědovice lies in the valley of the Obrtka stream. The landscape has traditionally been shaped by agriculture; the Kokořínsko–Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area includes the municipality of Snědovice in the Ústecký Region. The landscape and architectural history therefore offer different themes for planning a trip: on one hand, the valley and cultural landscape; on the other, the historic buildings and their respective styles.

Snědovice is stop 13 on the family-friendly educational trail “Naučné putování loupežníka Štětky” (Robber Štětka’s Educational Journey). This is distinct from the historical Snědovická cesta: it ran from Mělník via Liběchov, past today’s Hraběcí and Marian chapels, to Radouň; a branch then turned off towards Snědovice. The educational trail and the historical route thus represent two different connections to the area: a family-friendly themed trail and a historical link between several places.

Places to Visit Nearby

Nearby, the municipality of Snědovice recommends the Helfenburk Castle ruins as a place to visit, highlighting their romantic appeal and a history steeped in legend. The municipality also recommends Ploskovice Castle as a place to visit. Around 1720, Anna Marie Toskánská of the House of Saxe-Lauenburg had a magnificent summer residence built there.

For your planning, this means that Snědovice focuses on local architectural history, rural architecture and the family-friendly educational trail; the municipality’s recommendations add places to visit nearby. You can decide whether to focus on architectural styles in the village or on the places recommended by the municipality.
