Discover Střelice: Natural Monument, Church and Pump Track
Accommodation in Střelice
When considering Střelice as a travel destination, three main attractions stand out: the Střelická bažinka wetland, the architectural history of the Church of the Holy Trinity (Nejsvětější Trojice), and the POD LESEM bicycle pump track. The Střelické Museum, the Zvonička bell tower and traditional events offer further perspectives. This makes it possible to decide, based on your specific interests, whether nature watching, local history or cycling should take priority in planning your trip.
Natural surroundings and seasonal observations
Střelická bažinka is a natural monument of approximately four hectares, designated in 1980. The peat bog lies in the floodplain of the small Bobrava River. Its habitats include wetland communities with reed beds and an adjoining beech stand. The great crested newt and the fire-bellied toad are found in this natural area; smooth newts and great crested newts reproduce there regularly.
In spring, you can observe numerous frogs returning to the banks to breed. This seasonal observation is distinct from the habitats and species occurrences described as permanent. Take care not to disturb the amphibians, and check local access arrangements before visiting. Another natural attraction is Střelický les, a protected natural area designated in 1980 and one of the richest locations for the protected white dittany plant (Dictamnus albus L.).
Architectural history at the Church of the Holy Trinity
The Church of the Holy Trinity (Nejsvětější Trojice) is the oldest building in Střelice. Two bricked-up Gothic vaults in its south wall attest to its medieval origins. The five-sided chancel is also one of the early structural features: it forms an original Gothic chapel. The west tower has a rectangular entrance portal with a moulded stone frame.
Later furnishings include a Baroque altar from the second half of the 18th century. The altarpiece is by the painter Josef Stern. The building thus brings together Gothic architectural features and Baroque furnishings. If you are interested in local history, its different structural elements offer specific clues for distinguishing between these historical periods.
Museum, remembrance and traditions
The Střelické Museum exhibits objects and artefacts from everyday life in the village in earlier times. Its collections consist mainly of donations from Střelice residents and include clothing, tools, equipment, dishes and toys. The museum also documents the history of Střelice’s architectural development. Its exhibits focus both on everyday life and on how the town’s built environment has evolved.
The Zvonička bell tower commemorates the killing of Střelice residents during the Thirty Years’ War. Traditional events include Mladé hody and Staré hody. Their dates vary each year, so check the specific event dates if either festival is important to your travel plans.
Cycling and the pump track
The POD LESEM pump track is a dirt course for bicycles with dirt jumps as well as wooden and mobile obstacles. The purpose-built circuit consists of rollers and banked turns and is ridden without pedalling. It is used to practise bicycle control and balance. The pump track is therefore a clearly defined cycling attraction, distinct from Střelice’s nature and history themes.
Getting there and planning
Střelice railway station is on lines 240 and 244 and is part of the integrated transport system. It offers step-free access to all platforms. Check the timetable and platform access again before travelling, as transport services can change. When deciding whether Střelice is right for your trip, you can weigh up different interests: seasonal nature watching, architectural and local history, or a cycling activity at the pump track.
