Šlapanice: Cultural History and Nature
Accommodation in Šlapanice
Šlapanice can be explored from several perspectives when planning a trip: architectural history, cultural memory and protected natural areas each offer different points of interest, alongside designated hiking and cycling routes. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether culture, nature or a specific route should take priority.
Architectural History and Culture
The Šlapanice Museum is located in the city centre, in a Renaissance scholiast’s residence on the main square. The residence was built in 1613. The museum presents exhibitions on a range of themes, each complemented by a play area or programmes for children. The venue thus combines a distinctive architectural history with varied exhibition themes and an additional offering specifically for children.
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (“Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie”) is Šlapanice’s oldest and most valuable architectural monument. The original Romanesque church was probably built at the end of the 12th century or the beginning of the 13th century. The medieval church was surrounded by a wall with bastions, forming a fortified church complex.
Šlapanice Chateau was built as a country residence in the Rococo style, probably in the second half of the 18th century. During the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805, it served as a French military field hospital. Both its approximate construction date and a specific, precisely dated episode in the history of the battle are therefore relevant to understanding the chateau.
Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are also part of the local culture of remembrance. They are set into pavements in front of the respective properties at several addresses in Šlapanice.
Nature on Different Scales
The Andělka a Čertovka Natural Monument covers 3.37 hectares on steep slopes above the right bank of the Říčka, on the northern edge of Šlapanice. The Návrší Natural Monument protects heat-loving communities on Culm conglomerates within the cadastral area of Šlapanice. The two natural monuments differ in their defining features: Andělka a Čertovka is characterized by its area, hillside setting and riverbank, while Návrší is defined by the protected habitat on the conglomerates.
The Říčka watercourse flows through the central part of the cadastral area of Šlapanice, including the city itself. Velký hájek is almost entirely covered by deciduous forest. The natural attractions therefore range from a specific natural monument on the northern edge of the city, to the river running through the central cadastral area, and an area almost entirely dominated by deciduous woodland.
Plan Routes and Dates
A yellow-marked hiking trail starts in Šlapanice and runs via Santon, Tvarožná and Jiříkovice to Prace. The Slavkov Battlefield cycling route follows the Sokolnice–Prace–Šlapanice stretch. The hiking trail’s starting point and intermediate stops are specified, while the cycling route’s sequence of places is given. If you plan to take either route, check the latest route details before setting off, as they may be updated.
The traditional Šlapanice events calendar includes a Masopust carnival procession on the Sunday afternoon before Ash Wednesday. Its date varies from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around the procession, check the specific event date in advance.
