Discover Týn nad Vltavou
Accommodation in Týn nad Vltavou
When looking for hotels in Týn nad Vltavou, you can first consider which aspects of the town you want to shape your stay: museum visits, historic buildings, a viewpoint, or a seasonal trip on the Vltava. The attractions offer different points of interest to help you plan your trip.
Museum, Moldavites, and architectural history
The Town Museum is housed in the former chateau at the upper end of the square. Its collection includes the largest Moldavite collection in Bohemia. There is also an exhibition on puppetry dedicated to Matěj Kopecký. Those interested in natural history and culture will find two distinct subjects under one roof: these unusual stones and the history of puppetry.
Another chapter in the town’s history can be explored in the Vltavotýnské underground passages. This historic and technical monument is open to the public as part of guided tours, making a tour the appropriate way to visit. Churches and smaller monuments also add to the picture of the town’s architectural history: the publicly accessible tower of St. James’s Church houses a painting exhibition; access details may vary. St. Vitus’s Church is an early Baroque building dating from 1681 to 1682.
Among the town’s striking historic facades is the newer Salt House, which is preserved as a protected cultural monument. Its facade is adorned with frescoes of mermaids and lions carrying salt barrels; they probably date from the early 19th century. Another date in the history of the local Salt House is 1708, when a second Salt House was built on the left bank of the Vltava. These two details give the subject both an architectural and a historical timeframe.
Semenec: natural history and views
The four-hectare Semenec Museum is a natural science park offering games, educational activities, adventure challenges, and activities for children. Its park collections include native and exotic plants, as well as rocks and fossils. Natural history topics are thus combined with hands-on activities; families looking for this kind of experience can take the combination into account when planning their visit.
Another view of the surrounding area awaits from the five-meter-high Semenec observation tower. Built in the 1930s, it offers views of the Vltava and the entire town of Týn nad Vltavou. The museum and the tower offer different experiences: collections and activities take center stage at the former, while the latter provides an overview of the river and town.
River cruises and outdoor recreation
Seasonal sightseeing boats operate from Týn nad Vltavou on round trips to the confluence of the Vltava and Lužnice rivers, continuing to the Kořensko Reservoir and back. As the cruises run seasonally, it is worth checking the timetable before planning a trip. Wayside shrines stand at the confluence; locally, they are also called Semenecká kaple. Despite the name, they are not a chapel.
Since August 2025, there has been a disc golf course above the Hlinky Reservoir. It is freely accessible every day and suitable for all age groups. Disc golf discs can be borrowed during opening hours from the tourist information center by presenting an ID card and paying a refundable deposit of 100 Kč. As operating details may change, check the current rental terms before your visit.
Those who prefer to walk to a monument can follow the route to Velký Depot. From the Hlinecké sídliště residential area, the path follows an avenue parallel to the road to Veselí nad Lužnicí. Turn left in the Na Šancích forest; after about 0.5 kilometers, you will reach the Baroque sandstone group. It commemorates the disaster that took place at the camp there on June 21, 1753. The approximate distance refers to the section from the turn in the forest.
Art and summer performances
The Týn nad Vltavou Town Gallery focuses on art connected with books or texts. Painting or photography exhibitions occasionally supplement the program, which may change. Another cultural venue is the open-air theater, built in 1983, with a revolving stage. During the summer season, the Vltavan theater group regularly organizes performances by local and visiting ensembles; the stage is also used for concerts and music festivals. If you are planning your stay around an exhibition or performance, check the dates in advance.
