Úsilné: Chapel, Folk Baroque and Local Traditions
Accommodation in Úsilné
Úsilné brings together several clearly distinct themes: a Neo-Gothic chapel, local examples of Folk Baroque, a well with a donkey statue, an educational trail and a traditional baked good. Together, they offer different ways to explore architecture, local history, landscape and local food culture. If you are considering the village as a travel destination, distinguishing between these themes can help you decide whether architectural details, land use or local traditions should be your main focus.
Chapel and Folk Baroque
The Chapel of St Wenceslas is Neo-Gothic and dates from 1900. Another architectural feature of Úsilné is Folk Baroque, represented by the U Sukdolů farmstead and house No. 9, “U Prokšů.”
The gable of the U Sukdolů farmstead has particularly large volutes. Volutes are curved architectural forms; on the gable, they are a specific detail that helps describe the building’s design. The chapel and the examples of Folk Baroque can be classified as different stylistic references: Neo-Gothic architecture on the one hand and rural Baroque on the other. Thus, Úsilné combines a clearly dated building with two examples of a regional architectural style, with U Sukdolů also distinguished by a striking gable feature.
Well and local character
The well in Úsilné features a bronze statue of a donkey. Water from the Eliášova štola is channelled into the wells of Úsilné. This feature combines a figurative ornament with a named water source. It sets the well apart from the buildings, whose distinctive features are primarily evident in their architecture and style.
Educational trail and land use
The Člověk a krajina educational trail has 13 stops with information panels. One stop on the outskirts of Úsilné covers the village’s history and land use. The trail thus offers a different perspective from the architectural monuments, focusing on local history and land use together. The 13 stops indicate the scope of the information available, while the stop on the outskirts connects the trail to Úsilné.
Traditions and local speciality
The Svatováclavská pouť was revived and was associated with a gathering of former residents and friends of the village. The festival is therefore also linked to the connection that former residents and other friends feel with Úsilné.
The local food culture includes “oslí uši”: women bakers from Úsilné make them using an old recipe, in either a savoury or a sweet version. The two versions differ in flavour, but share the same traditional pastry. If you would like to try this speciality, ask locally about its current availability.
Visiting the Eliášova dědičná štola
A 400 m section of the Eliášova dědičná štola is open to visitors; visits can be arranged in advance. If the tour is important to your travel plans, take this arrangement into account when planning your visit.
