If you would like to consider local history, sacred architecture and cycling connections when planning a stay, you can assess Roudné through these different themes. The village lies on the left bank of the Malše and is considered a typical high-medieval planned settlement village. It also has an ensemble of three niche chapels designated as a cultural monument, as well as two different cycling connections: a route from Velešín to Roudné and the option of reaching the centre of České Budějovice via cycle route No. 1018. This makes it possible to distinguish between the historic village layout, Baroque architecture and cycling options when choosing a destination.

Village History and the Medieval Centre

Roudné was first mentioned in 1411. The medieval village centre consisted of two rows of large farmsteads enclosing the village square. Roudné has preserved its nearly intact settlement and built structure. Its classification as a planned settlement village and the preserved form of its centre draw attention to the shape of the village as a whole: the rows of farmsteads and the village square are part of the same historic layout. For those interested in settlement history, this offers a different perspective from looking at a single building; what matters here is how the structure of the village works as a whole.

Niche Chapels and Baroque Architecture

The ensemble of three niche chapels is designated as a cultural monument. The chapels were arranged in Roudné in the 18th century as expressions of religious devotion. At the same time, the ensemble is an important example of high-quality Baroque architecture in South Bohemia. Two perspectives complement each other here: the monument designation identifies the ensemble as cultural heritage, while its architectural-historical significance draws attention to the quality of its Baroque design. Thus, alongside the history of the village layout, there is a clearly defined theme of religious and Baroque architecture.

The Malše and Its Former River Landscape

The Malše is also part of Roudné’s landscape history. Before the river was regulated, it formed large meanders south of the village and spread into a wide floodplain to the northwest. Some of the river sections cut off at that time have survived. The landscape history thus highlights different features: the meanders to the south, the floodplain northwest of the village and the surviving sections of former river courses. The river adds the landscape’s transformation over time to the picture of the village and its chapels. Roudné can therefore be understood both through its preserved settlement structure and through the changes to the Malše before it was regulated.

Cycling Connections and Bridges to Vidov

For cycling trips, two route connections should be distinguished. The Velešín–Roudné cycle route leads from Velešín to Roudné. In addition, from Roudné there is the option of reaching the centre of České Budějovice via cycle route No. 1018. The first route identifies Roudné as the destination of a route from Velešín; the second leads from Roudné towards the city centre. This distinction helps with basic orientation: it shows two different route connections without presenting them as the same route.

The history of the bridges towards Vidov also includes two distinct details. The former timber-framed bridge over the Malše to Vidov was a cultural monument dating from 1892. The new bridge over the Malše to Vidov received the “Stavba roku 2010” award. For the former timber-framed bridge, the focus is on its monument status and year of construction; for the new bridge, it is on the award. This keeps the two features of the bridge history clearly distinct.
