Zhoř combines the history of the village with a cycling route that partly follows the course of a former Imperial Road. Two listed monuments with dates are located in the village center and on the outskirts; the cycling route passes through named sections in the cadastral areas of Zhoř and Skapce. One perspective focuses on dates and affiliation, the other on route lengths and the former alignment. Together, historic buildings and the history of the route shape the character of the village.

History and Monuments

Zhoř was first mentioned in 1239. Until 1850, the village belonged to the Kladruby Monastery and then to its estate. These details mark two milestones in the village’s history: 1239 marks its first mention, while 1850 marks the end of its affiliation with the monastery. The dates of the two local monuments fall between these milestones. The Marian Chapel is dated 1715 and stands in the center of the village square. On the outskirts, to the left as you leave in the direction of Kostelec, stands a Boží muka, or wayside shrine, dating from 1654. The municipality describes it as the oldest monument in Zhoř. There are 61 years between the construction dates of 1654 and 1715. The two monuments thus differ in both age and location: the chapel stands in the center, while the wayside shrine is on the outskirts.

Since time immemorial, a road connecting Kladruby with Horšovský Týn has run through the center of Zhoř. This historic road connection adds a transport-related dimension to the history of the buildings and gives the village center another layer of history.

Cycling Route and Sections

The Zhoř cycling route includes a 0.625 km section in the cadastral area of Zhoř. A parallel 0.491 km section in the cadastral area of Skapce connects directly to it. Together, the two named sections total 1.116 km; the section in Zhoř is 0.134 km longer. The separate lengths show how the described route is divided between the two cadastral areas. The cycling route partly follows the forgotten course of a former Imperial Road. It serves as an alternative to the existing unsuitable connection to the busy II/193 road. Check the route conditions on site before setting off.

What to Consider When Choosing a Destination

When choosing a destination for a hotel stay, you can weigh the two themes according to your interests. The village’s history can be traced through a timeline: from its first mention in 1239, through the 1654 wayside shrine and the 1715 chapel, to the end of its affiliation with the monastery in 1850. The cycling route offers a different comparison: its named sections differ in length and cadastral area, and it also partly follows the course of a former Imperial Road. This will help you decide whether the village’s history or the route’s alignment should be the deciding factor for your trip.
