Skomelno can be explored for trip planning through three specific themes: a circular educational trail, local history and the surrounding landscape. The trail offers a clear connection to hiking; historical records and individual memorial sites add to the picture of the village. If you are looking for a destination with a walk and a local historical connection, these features offer different ways to shape your stay.

Hiking the Putování s Dubíky

Putování s Dubíky is a 5 km circular educational trail that starts and ends in Skomelno. The trail covers Radeč, Mitterwald and the Radnická sloj. Its length and circular route provide clear details for planning; the topics mentioned also help you understand the walk in terms of its content.

The educational trail is marked in places and is not maintained by the KČT. Take the partial markings into account when finding your way, and check the trail conditions before setting out, as they may change. The trail leads to the Skomelský oak. This oak stands at the edge of the forest near Skomelno; it is said to be more than 600 years old. It came second in the 2014 Tree of the Year competition. The tree is therefore both a destination on the educational trail and a distinct landmark in the landscape.

Local History and Memorial Sites

Skomelno was first mentioned in written records in 1379. Otík ze Skomelna is also named as a resident of Skomelno from 1379. Both details date to the same year, but refer to different things: the first written mention of the village and a named resident. In 1631, Skomelno passed into the possession of Petr Příchovský z Příchovic. This makes it possible to distinguish chronologically between the early mention, the person and the later change of ownership.

A monument to the victims of the First World War stands on a bend in the village centre. The northern arm of a water-filled moat remains from the former fortification. The two historical points of interest have different emphases: remembrance of the war victims and the surviving remains of a fortification.

Landscape and a Climbing Destination Nearby

Skomelno lies at the foot of the wooded Zbirožské Mountains, north of Mount Radeč. Radeč Nature Park and the Skomelák pond are also near Skomelno. If the landscape is a factor in your choice of destination, you can consider the wooded mountain foothills, the nature park and the pond as different points of interest.

The Věž u Skomelna, an 8-metre-high rhyolite rock with permanently installed safety equipment, is nearby. The approach starts at the Skomelno football pitch and follows a forest track towards Lhota pod Radčem. For those interested in climbing, both the rock’s geology and height and the described approach are relevant. The educational trail is a circular route that starts and ends in Skomelno; the approach to the Věž starts at the football pitch and heads in a named direction. As trail conditions can change, check the approach before setting out.
