Podmokly is located in the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area. Cultural and recreational attractions offer further points of interest: castle history, historical finds, monuments, a blue-marked hiking trail and a multi-purpose sports field. Depending on your travel interests, you can focus on local history, Baroque cultural heritage or active pursuits. The landscape, historical remains and sporting opportunities are distinct themes to consider when planning your trip.

History Across Several Periods

Podmokly was first mentioned in historical records in 1045. The present-day Podmokly Castle was built in 1707 by Count Karel Michna of Vacínov. Another point in time is 30 July 1771: by then, the Podmokelský hoard comprised a total of 4,211 Celtic gold coins weighing 28 kilograms. A significant remnant of the Podmokly fortress was investigated from 1832 to 1836.

These details offer different perspectives on the past: an early mention, a building, a coin hoard and a fortress remnant. The town’s history is therefore not limited to the castle alone. When comparing historical topics, it is worth keeping the details distinct: 1707 dates the construction of the castle, while 30 July 1771 is associated with the coin hoard. The fortress remnant, in turn, is linked to the period when it was investigated.

Baroque Cultural Heritage and Monuments

Northeast of Podmokly, on the road to Hradiště, stands the Calvary ensemble. It is a significant Baroque sandstone work from the 18th century. Its style, material and location give the ensemble a distinct profile among the town’s cultural attractions. It complements the castle’s history with an example of Baroque design and a specific point of interest in the area around Podmokly.

Two statues are also included on Podmokly’s official list of monuments: the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk and the statue of the Immaculate Virgin Mary. Together with the Calvary ensemble, they illustrate different forms of religious cultural heritage. For a thematic overview, you can distinguish these monuments from the historical details about the castle and the coin hoard: here, the focus is on artworks and statues, while those other topics concern buildings and local history.

Hiking Trail and Sporting Opportunities

A blue-marked hiking trail runs through the valley of the Zbirožský potok and is named Cesta protifašistických bojovníků. A named trail with a specific marking and a described route through the valley is therefore part of the local hiking opportunities.

The multi-purpose sports field in Podmokly is intended for active recreation by the general public of all ages, especially young people. The field can be used to play tennis, small-sided football, volleyball, nohejbal and basketball. The municipal rules for its use were adopted on 7 June 2021. If you plan to use the sports field, check its current availability and booking conditions in advance. This will help you plan around your chosen sport and the applicable conditions of use, rather than treating the field’s facilities as equivalent to the hiking trail.

An Event Date from 2023

In 2023, the traditional Czech May celebrations known as Staročeské máje returned to Podmokly after a three-year break. If an event is important to your travel plans, check the dates for the year you want to visit. This keeps the festival as a distinct cultural point of interest alongside the enduring descriptions of history and monuments and the recreational offerings.
