Planá U Mariánských Lázní: Mining History and Churches
Accommodation in Planá U Mariánských Lázní
Planá U Mariánských Lázní brings together a variety of reasons to visit: silver mining and coin minting, two churches with a long architectural history, walks in the surrounding area and the Koupaliště Planá outdoor swimming pool. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay. The cultural attractions focus on architectural and urban history; natural areas and educational trails lead you further afield.
Mining History and Coin Minting
The Štola Ondřej Šlik mine was established at the end of the 16th century, when silver mining in Planá and its surroundings was flourishing. Its underground workings are nearly 200 metres long. The Šlik legacy links silver mining with coin minting: after the mint in Jáchymov was closed, it was moved to Planá. The town’s history therefore offers two perspectives to explore together: silver mining and coin minting.
Churches Between Medieval Fabric and Baroque Architecture
The Church of St Peter and Paul is the oldest architectural monument in Planá. Its distinctive features include 13th-century frescoes and a rare Romanesque portal with an arcaded frieze. After extensive renovation, it is now used as a wedding and concert hall and, during the summer months, as a gallery for modern art. Medieval elements meet contemporary cultural uses here. If you are interested in concerts or the summer gallery, check the current programme in advance.
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary dates back to a Late Romanesque church from the second quarter of the 13th century. The building continued to evolve into the 20th century; two Baroque remodelling phases in the 18th century had a major influence on its present appearance. Together with the adjoining rectory, the church has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958. Galerie ve věži was established in 1995 in the tower, which had previously been unused. A bell more than 500 years old also hangs there. The gallery opens seasonally, so check its current opening hours before visiting.
Walks, Nature and Other Traces
A section of the town fortifications is located on Na Příkopech Street, behind house no. 131. The Kosí potok catchment area and Vlčí hora, with its nature reserve and the ruins of Volfštejn Castle, offer opportunities for walks nearby. The protected landscape area of Slavkovský les is also close to Planá. Its landscapes include peat bogs, mineral springs, mountain meadows and forests.
The “Expedice do historie země Horní Falc a Západní Čechy” educational trail extends through the area around Planá and Chodová Planá, as well as Massenricht in Upper Palatinate, near Hirschau. Its route reflects the regional perspective of the subject in its very name. If you plan a walk or the educational trail, check the local route conditions.
Koupaliště Planá Outdoor Swimming Pool
Koupaliště Planá offers a different focus. The site covers 3.5 hectares; the water area measures 10,790 square metres. The outdoor swimming pool has a children’s paddling pool with attractions and sanitary facilities that are also accessible to wheelchair users. Free parking is available nearby. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check the swimming pool’s current information before your visit.
