Bezdružice: Hiking, Railway and Castle Culture
Accommodation in Bezdružice
If you are considering Bezdružice as a destination for a stay, the marked circular trail, the railway and the glass art in the castle offer different points of interest. This allows you to decide whether to focus your trip more on hiking, railway history or culture.
Hiking and Cycling
The “Údolím Úterského a Nezdického potoka” educational trail is a 13.5-kilometre circular route along marked hiking paths. It starts and ends at Kryštof Harant Square in Bezdružice. For planning purposes, you therefore have both the route length and a fixed starting and finishing point. The trail focuses on the history of milling in the area around Bezdružice, along the Úterský potok and Nezdický potok streams. The route thus combines a specific hiking trail with a regional history theme.
There is also a named route for a cycling trip: “Po kopcích, potocích a vsích Bezdružicka” starts and ends in Bezdružice. This gives you two different ways to plan a trip: a marked circular trail with a stated length and a cycling route that starts and finishes in town.
Railway and Museum
The Bezdružická lokálka runs daily from Pňovany via Konstantinovy Lázně to Bezdružice and has been in operation since 1901. Nostalgic steam trains also run on the line for visitors. If you are specifically planning a steam train ride, it is best to check the current service dates in advance.
The Bezdružice Railway Museum is housed in a historic railway warehouse next to the station building. It is dedicated to the history of railway transport in the Plzeňský kraj, particularly the Pňovany–Bezdružice line. The museum is generally open only during special events on the line or by prior arrangement. Plan your visit around the event dates or arrange it in advance.
Castle and Glass Art
The Baroque Bezdružice Castle stands on a rise above the town square. Its Gothic rooms house a permanent exhibition of modern Czech glass art by students of Professor S. Libenský. The castle’s Muzeum české sklářské tvorby displays works by Czech glass artists, including S. Libenský, J. Brychtová, V. Cigler, B. Eliáš, J. Harcuba, M. Karel, V. Kopecký and R. Roubíček. The Baroque castle, Gothic rooms and modern glass art thus provide distinct historical and artistic accents. Check whether the exhibition is open to visitors before you go.
Other Sites of Cultural and Historical Interest
The synagogue in Bezdružice is designated an immovable cultural monument. The Jewish cemetery in Bezdružice, also known as Řešín, contains 183 gravestones. Most date from the mid-19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The dates therefore point primarily to two different periods. The present-day church in Bezdružice can also be dated: it was built in 1710–1711.
A Trip to the Surrounding Area
The Zaječí rybník pond is located in the immediate vicinity of Bezdružice, about two kilometres away in the direction of Řešín. There are opportunities for fishing and relaxation there, and swimming is possible during the summer months. When planning, you can therefore choose between the town’s cultural and historical attractions and a stay by the pond, bearing in mind that swimming is explicitly seasonal.
