Discover Lazany: Village Green, Castles and Trails
Accommodation in Lazany
There are several ways to shape a trip to Lazany: explore the layout of the village around its irregularly shaped village green, learn about the history of Volfštejn and Třebel castles, or follow trails that take in the nature and history of the Kosí potok valley or the summit of Vlčí hora. Another option is the old Německý mlýn, which must be arranged in advance. The village layout, castle connections, educational trail and mill visit are distinct themes to consider when planning your trip.
Village Green and Village Layout
A village green is an open space within a village. Lažany is laid out around an irregularly shaped village green, which has two ponds. The green is therefore part of the village’s basic structure, with both ponds situated within this space. The layout and ponds can be viewed on two levels: as the overall shape of the village and as bodies of water on the green. If you are getting to know Lažany through its village layout, this combination is a helpful place to start.
Castles and Historical Connections
In the second half of the 14th century, Lažany belonged to Volfštejn Castle; later, the village became part of the estate of nearby Třebel Castle. These are two distinct historical connections: first, belonging to the castle, and later, to its estate. The sequence provides a clear timeframe: Volfštejn is associated with the second half of the 14th century, while Třebel appears in a later period of the village’s history.
Třebel Castle has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1958. The ruins of Třebel Castle are in the village of the same name, on a rocky promontory above the Kosí potok. Here, a dated protection status meets a specific landform: the rocky promontory places the ruins above the watercourse in the landscape. To understand Třebel, you can consider both its protected status and its position in the terrain.
Volfštejn Castle was founded on a spur of Vlčí hora near Černošín. Unlike Třebel, whose ruins lie on a rocky promontory above the Kosí potok, Volfštejn is notably associated with a mountain spur. The two castles can therefore also be distinguished by their respective descriptions of location.
Educational Trail Along the Kosí potok
The Kosí potok educational trail is 8 km long and explores the nature and history of the Kosí potok valley. The trail to Volfštejn Castle continues to the summit of Vlčí hora. The trails therefore have different focuses: the educational trail connects the valley’s nature and history, while the route to Volfštejn features the castle and summit. Its length of eight kilometres gives you a concrete point of reference when planning to include the educational trail in your trip.
Německý mlýn
The old Německý mlýn is in Lažany, in the cadastral area of Lažany u Černošína. The mill can be visited by prior arrangement, so arrange a time before your visit. A 1713 revision of the Berní rula describes Německý mlýn as a mill with three wheels powered by a constant flow of water. The visiting requirement and historical reference complement each other: arranging your visit in advance is important for planning, while the year places the mill in its historical context.
