Letohrad brings together historic buildings and the Muzeum řemesel with nature themes along the Bažantnice–Obora educational trail and in the château garden. This gives you a range of reasons to get to know the town better: architecture, the history of crafts and nature education. The focus you choose depends on whether you are more interested in historic spaces, exhibitions or a marked educational trail.

Building history and crafts

Letohrad’s urban conservation area dates back to the early 16th century. It includes an elongated rectangular square with preserved arcades. The Baroque Church of St. Wenceslas, whose interior features unique stucco decoration, is also part of the conservation area. The layout of the square, the arcades and the church interior create distinct architectural accents within the historic townscape.

On Kopeček stands the five-sided Baroque pilgrimage chapel of St. John of Nepomuk, built in 1734. Its architecture recalls the Church of St. John of Nepomuk on Zelená hora in Žďár nad Sázavou. This comparison connects two explicitly named buildings and offers another point of reference for architecture enthusiasts. A diocesan report dated 8 August 2020 described the chapel as a pilgrimage site that was still active; check the current opening arrangements before visiting.

The Muzeum řemesel is housed in the protected Nový dvůr complex, which dates from 1750. It comprises 89 connected exhibitions on crafts and trades from 1840 to 1930. Rather than focusing on individual objects, it presents a broad range of craft and trade topics from a clearly defined period. If you are interested in working practices and the history of trades, the museum complements the town’s architectural history with its own subject area. Check the latest visitor information before making plans.

Educational trail and nature themes

The Bažantnice–Obora educational trail starts on the northern edge of Letohrad, at the entrance to the Letohradská bažantnice natural monument. It is marked, rated moderate and has eight stops. Its topics include the history and present-day practice of forest management, historical context and the area’s natural features, as well as local flora and fauna. It also covers hunting, local legends and water management. The trail thus combines nature-related information with forest history and regional stories instead of focusing on a single subject.

The starting point of the educational trail is accessible by bus and train from Letohrad. Check the current timetable for your specific journey. As trail features may change, it is also a good idea to check the latest information on the route and stops before setting out.

A report dated 5 April 2026 names Letohrad as one of only two natural sites in the Czech Republic where the strictly protected Kandík psí zub is found, and also as its northernmost site in the country. Its flowering is seasonal. If this natural attraction is relevant to your trip, take the flowering period into account when planning.

Orangery, educational garden and wildlife

A report dated 5 April 2026 describes the restored orangery in Letohrad’s château garden, which has a permanent exhibition of Australian parrots. It also houses a saltwater aquarium with colourful corals and fish. Check the exhibitions again before your trip so that your plans reflect current visitor access.

The educational garden in the château garden offers interactive features. These include a dendrophone, where you can try out the different sounds made by various types of wood. As outdoor installations may change, you should also check the latest visitor information for this attraction.

The “Kouzelný les – fauna České republiky” experience at Tvrz Orlice features stuffed animals, a nature area and information about wildlife. While the educational trail covers flora and fauna alongside forestry and water management, this experience focuses more specifically on fauna. Check the availability of the visitor route in advance.
