A regional cycling route adds another perspective. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Stradouň, you can consider whether the tradition, the historical stories, or the landscape best suits the purpose of your trip.

Vodění Jidáše at Easter

In Stradouň, Vodění Jidáše is an Easter tradition whose origins, according to eyewitnesses, date back to the end of the 19th century. Rattles and processions are part of the celebrations on Thursday and Friday. On Saturday, a procession with Jidáš makes its way through the village; after nine o’clock, it stops at every house and ends with the burning of Jidáš. The procession route is almost three kilometres long. If you are travelling for this tradition, check the exact date and schedule in advance, as the times can vary from year to year.

Local history and traditions

The first written mention of Stradouň dates from 1160. In this connection, Lord Štěpán granted the Podlažice monastery the proceeds from a toll. Another historical reference is the important Trstenická trade route, which passed through Stradouň.

A local tradition tells of human bones found in a hill, said to belong to Russians who supposedly came there during the Napoleonic Wars. The arrival of potatoes is also recounted as a local tradition: around the beginning of the second half of the 18th century, a farmer from Štokrávy in Austria is said to have brought potatoes to Stradouň in connection with the salt trade. The village’s history thus brings together a dated event, a trade route, and several local stories.

Valley, stream, and woodland

Stradouň lies in the broad valley of the Loučná. The Bětnický potok flows through the centre of the village; its banks are lined with a notable stand of alders, linden trees, ash trees, and oaks. This brings together a wide valley and a tree-lined watercourse in the heart of the village. Woodland covers only about five hectares and is concentrated along the eastern and northern edges of the village. The stream therefore shapes the centre, while the woodland lies around the edges—distinct points of reference for the local landscape.

Explore Stradouň by bike

Regional cycling route 4192 runs from Stradouň through Vraclav to Vysoké Mýto; the section described is 9.4 kilometres long. Before setting out, check the signage and road conditions. The almost three kilometres of the Easter procession and the 9.4 kilometres of the cycling section refer to different routes: a local tradition and a regional cycling route. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide whether the Easter date or the bike ride is your priority.
