České Heřmanice offers points of interest for a range of travel interests: the Church of St. James the Greater is the town’s most prominent landmark, while the Borová Nature Trail and a marked cycling route draw attention to the rural, pond-studded landscape. Historic buildings and local events are also part of the town’s character. This gives you the opportunity to choose a focus for your stay—perhaps architectural history, routes through the landscape or traditional festivals.

Church of St. James: Gothic traces and Baroque reconstruction

The Church of St. James the Greater was remodelled in Baroque style from 1720 to 1733. The front section of the nave was extended with two Baroque side chapels. These details describe different aspects of the building: the period of reconstruction and the defining design of the front section of the nave. When exploring the church, you can note both a specific building phase and a feature of its architecture.

Two Gothic portals should also be distinguished. The church preserves a Late Gothic portal from 1547 in the north wall of the presbytery. A Gothic portal to the sacristy also survives in the left wall of the presbytery. The 1547 portal can therefore be dated precisely; for the portal to the sacristy, its surviving Gothic form is the key detail. Together, these features offer a glimpse of different historical elements of the church without suggesting that they belong to the same building phase.

The granary is also one of the historically significant buildings in České Heřmanice. For visitors looking beyond church architecture to the town’s built heritage, it provides another named historic landmark.

Borová Nature Trail and routes through the landscape

The Borová Nature Trail starts by a former inn on a country road. From there, it passes an orchard, enters the Labičské Valley and continues to two historic underground ice cellars. Its route and destinations give the trail its own character: it links a section of the landscape with glimpses of historic structures. The starting point and named stops provide practical landmarks when planning a visit.

Along the trail, there are information boards, an insect hotel, a learning table and stations for identifying trees. Each feature has a different focus: the boards and learning table provide information, the insect hotel draws attention to insects, and the tree stations focus on identifying trees. This means you can get a sense of the trail not only from its route but also from the topics covered at its stations.

A marked cycling route offers a way to explore the rural, pond-studded landscape of České Heřmanice. Alongside the nature trail, it provides another way to focus on the area’s character: at Borová, the route and its stations offer specific points of interest, while the cycling route centres on the landscape and its ponds. Which perspective best suits your trip depends on whether you are more interested in the nature trail or a bike ride through the landscape.

The fitness trail also has a clear landmark: a tourist rest area is located at its end. This detail refers to the fitness trail, not the end of the Borová Nature Trail.

Masopust and the fair

Masopust, featuring a pig-slaughter feast, is one of the traditional events in České Heřmanice. The masked parade took place for the eighth time in 2025. On 15 February 2025, the pig-slaughter feast was prepared by volunteer firefighters from České Heřmanice. The parade includes the symbolic burial of the double bass, which marks its end. For this edition, both the local preparation of the feast and a specific element of the parade are noted.

The Staročeský pouťový jarmark is another traditional event in České Heřmanice. The 2026 fair featured crafts and good food. If an event is a deciding factor in your travel plans, check your travel dates against a current event announcement; the examples described refer to the 2025 and 2026 editions.
