Ruda Nad Moravou offers two clear starting points for planning a trip: marked hiking and cycling routes, and historic buildings and monuments. The Church of St. Lawrence dominates the townscape, while named routes pass through the town or connect it with other places. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can decide in advance whether cultural history, hiking or cycling will be your main focus.

Landscape and routes

The Ruda Valley crosses the southern part of the Hanušovická Upland. To the west, the forested Žďár mountain massif rises to an elevation of 500 to 600 metres. Its landscape features include low serpentine rock formations and stands of Jeseníky larch. The valley and massif provide two distinct points of reference for understanding the landscape around Ruda Nad Moravou.

Hiking and cycling routes

Two marked hiking routes with different itineraries are described. The green-marked hiking route runs from Šumperk via Radomilov and Ruda Nad Moravou to Janoušov, continuing as far as Mlýnický dvůr. The yellow-marked local route starts at Ruda Nad Moravou railway station, passes through the town and ends at the crossroads at the summit of Šošola. The green route connects several named places; the yellow route leads from the railway station to a specific destination. You can distinguish between the two routes by their starting and ending points. Check the current route and status locally before setting out.

Two cycling connections are also mentioned. The long-distance Moravská stezka cycle route passes through Ruda Nad Moravou. It is 310 kilometres long; the full route described runs from Mikulovice via Jeseník, Hanušovice, Bludov, Mohelnice, Litovel, Olomouc, Kroměříž, Hodonín, Mikulčice and Lanžhot to Břeclav. The 310 kilometres refers to the route as a whole, not to a section within the town. Local cycle route 6223 connects Ruda Nad Moravou with Janoušov and U Tří Tabulí háj. The cycling routes therefore differ in their stated scope and the connections specifically mentioned.

Church and historic buildings

With its covered staircase, the Church of St. Lawrence is considered a landmark feature of Ruda Nad Moravou’s townscape. The present church building dates from 1784 and has late Renaissance foundations. The church’s place in the townscape and its different historical layers are therefore both of interest. The town is also home to a Baroque statue of the Virgin Mary dating from 1715.

Another part of the building history is reflected in the former Empire-style distillery complex. Its original layout, dating from the first half of the 19th century, has been preserved. The church, the statue of the Virgin Mary and the former distillery complex each offer a different focus: religious architecture, a dated Baroque work of art, and a group of buildings formerly used for distillation.
