Janoušov between landscape and local history

Janoušov offers different reasons to visit: a marked hiking trail with scenic views and historic traces of the village. This gives you two main interests to focus on when planning your trip: time on the Janoušov Circuit and a closer look at chapels, monuments and traditional crafts. You can assess the route by its approximate length, markings and trail surface; the village’s history is reflected in specific buildings and memorial sites. Choosing which of these interests to explore can give your day a clear direction.

Janoušov lies on the southern edge of Hrubý les; the northern part of the municipality extends above 700 metres. The Janoušov Circuit reaches 845 metres at its highest point and offers views of the Jeseníky Mountains. The two elevation figures refer to different locations: above 700 metres in the northern part of the municipality, and 845 metres at the route’s highest point. Views may vary depending on the season and vegetation. Janoušov can be reached via a turnoff to Bušín from the Šumperk–Červená Voda road. If you are travelling by car, check road conditions before setting off.

Hiking and navigation

The Janoušov Circuit is an approximately 9.5-kilometre hiking trail marked in blue. Several information boards and signposts line the route. Most of it runs along forest tracks; shorter sections follow paved roads and, in places, farm tracks. This means you can assess the walk not only by its approximate length but also by its varied surfaces. The route description, updated in 2020, rates the trail as suitable for families with children. Check the current trail markings locally before setting off.

A green-marked hiking trail also passes through Janoušov; check locally whether the markings still follow the current route. These provide different points of reference when choosing a walk: the Janoušov Circuit has an approximate length and trail surface specified, while the green trail is described by its route through the village. A tourist shelter has been built near the centre for passing hikers and day-trippers. Several traditional timber-framed houses remain; if you are specifically interested in them, it is advisable to confirm locally which ones are still standing.

Chapels, monuments and local history

Janoušov has a chapel dedicated to Saint Anne and another, wooden chapel. The Saint Anne Chapel dates from 1882. The wooden chapel was built in 2015–2016 and blessed on 24 July by the Bishop of Olomouc, Mons. Josef Hrdlička. Inside is a large wooden crucifix bearing the body of Christ. A small bell tower sits at the top, crowned with a cross. The chapel’s construction period, blessing and design give it distinctive historical and architectural features.

The monument to the World Wars stands on a slope near the municipal office. It consists of a polished granite stele with plaques bearing the names of those killed or missing in the First and Second World Wars. The monument was unveiled in 1921. A cross with the Mater Dolorosa is another historic feature: it dates from the first half of the 19th century and combines Neoclassical forms with enduring Baroque design elements. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk in Janoušov was declared a cultural monument by a decision dated 15 February 2012. A wooden statue in the village is believed to depict the settlement’s founder or locator.

Traces of traditional crafts

Traditional home industries in Janoušov included making brushes and rakes, weaving baskets from willow rods, binding birch besoms and sewing on thread buttons. These examples range from processing plant materials to making everyday items and sewing. The crafts of the past add another aspect of local history to the chapels and monuments: the work that was part of everyday life in Janoušov.
