Discover Úsov: Castle, Jewish Heritage and Cultural History
Accommodation in Úsov
Explore Úsov through its architectural and cultural history: the castle complex, churches, Jewish quarter and Chapel of St. Roch each offer a different focus for a stay. The landscape is also part of the picture: the southern tip of the cadastral area extends into the Litovelské Pomoraví Protected Landscape Area, specifically into the Doubrava forest complex. In Úsov, historic sites are thus combined with a clearly defined section of protected landscape.
Úsov Castle and the Hunting and Forestry Museum
Úsov Castle was originally built as a Gothic castle in the style of a French castellum and was first mentioned in 1260. Between 1688 and 1699, a Baroque palace was incorporated into the castle complex. The Lovecko-lesnické muzeum is housed in the castle’s Baroque Martinelli Palace. Its unique collection includes trophies and taxidermied animals from the Czech lands, as well as from Poland, Italy, India and Africa. The information about the castle’s history and the museum collection offer two different perspectives on a visit: the development of the complex and its natural-history exhibits.
Buildings and Historic Traces in the Town
The fortifications include the Hladomorna round tower. The foundations of the former Bílá Tower are located in the southwestern part of the complex. The fortifications thus feature a named round tower as well as the foundations of a former tower. The Church of St. Giles combines architectural and artistic details: it has a five-sided choir apse with six ribs and a massive western tower; it also houses paintings by Jan Kryštof Handke. The choir apse describes the shape of the choir’s eastern end, while the tower and paintings are other notable features of the church.
The Baroque Sýpka is part of the château grounds and has large painted sundials on its southern side. If you would like to see them in person, check whether they are visible before your visit. In the northwestern part of the town, the Jewish quarter forms a distinctive urban ensemble. The Jewish cemetery lies on its edge. It was established after 1643; the oldest surviving gravestones date from the late 17th century. The synagogue houses a permanent exhibition. Visits are possible by prior arrangement, so plan yours in advance.
Chapel of St. Roch and Pilgrimage
The striking Mannerist Chapel of St. Roch, built in 1624, stands above Úsov. A lime-tree avenue leads from the chapel to the water reservoir, where it joins a field path towards the centre of Úsov. From here, you can enjoy views of the surrounding area and the Morava Valley. A pilgrimage takes place at the chapel every August. If this event is central to your stay, check the specific event dates before travelling. You can choose between a stay focused on the castle and museum, Jewish history, or the pilgrimage and chapel.
Planning Your Stay in Úsov
For geographical orientation, Úsov lies at the intersection of roads 315 and 444, on the route between Zábřeh na Moravě and Uničov. The sites mentioned give Úsov a distinct cultural and historical character, without requiring you to focus your plans on just one attraction. When planning your trip, bear in mind that synagogue visits require prior arrangement and check the dates of the August pilgrimage.
