Slezské Pavlovice: Nature and History
Accommodation in Slezské Pavlovice
For your trip planning, the topics can be divided into three groups: wetlands, cultural heritage, and a regional cycling and hiking route. Within the nature topics, the two nature reserves differ considerably: Velký Pavlovický rybník focuses on aquatic and wetland ecosystems, while Džungle features forest and marshland habitats.
Nature Reserves and Wetland Habitats
Velký Pavlovický rybník is a 30.76-hectare nature reserve; its cadastral area also includes Slezské Pavlovice. Its aquatic and wetland ecosystems provide important habitats for breeding and migratory birds and amphibians, including the fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina).
Džungle Nature Reserve covers 9.9432 hectares in the cadastral area of Slezské Pavlovice. Its habitats include hardwood floodplain forest with old oaks, softwood stands of willows and alders, and extensive sedge marshes. These marshes provide habitat for protected amphibians; the reserve is also characterized by a diverse birdlife with breeding habitat and a large population of protected snowdrops.
The area figures allow for a direct size comparison: Velký Pavlovický rybník, at 30.76 hectares, is larger than Džungle, at 9.9432 hectares. The stated areas of focus also differ: aquatic and wetland ecosystems on the one hand, floodplain forest and sedge marshes on the other. This makes it possible to classify the nature of Slezské Pavlovice not only by reserve name and area, but also by habitat type.
The European protected area of Osoblažský výběžek also includes the cadastral area of Slezské Pavlovice. This means that, in addition to the two nature reserves, another protected-area designation is part of the local nature topics.
Castle History and Cultural Heritage
The castle of Slezské Pavlovice acquired its present appearance through a late Baroque renovation in the mid-18th century. The castle stands on the site of a fortress that probably already existed in the second half of the 14th century. The probable predecessor structure and the castle’s present appearance therefore belong to distinctly different historical periods. Remains of the castle park have been preserved at the castle.
The village is also home to a Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from the second half of the 18th century. For historical context, the probable fortress on the site, the castle’s late Baroque appearance, and another dated monument can thus be distinguished from one another.
