Rymarov: Cultural Monuments, Art and City History
Accommodation in Rymarov
Rymarov offers several distinct themes for a trip focused on cultural history: listed buildings, an exhibition on the city's history, archaeological and geological connections, and art. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay with this focus, you can first decide whether you are more interested in the city's development, its religious buildings, or the connection between the museum and the archaeological site.
City History and Appearance
The “Historie Rýmařova” exhibition presents finds dating from the city's founding in the 1270s through the 15th century. It therefore provides a chronological framework for the city's early history, distinct from later buildings and works of art. In the historic town center, the rectory is a cultural monument and one of the oldest and most valuable buildings. The town hall was also declared a cultural monument in 1966.
The townscape is also characterized by the large number of houses with dark roofs. These include roofs with their original slate covering as well as those with newer materials. The distinctive appearance thus combines historic and renewed roof surfaces.
Archaeology and Geology at Hrádek
At Hrádek – Burgstadel, archaeological and geological themes come together: the site is a protected archaeological site and also serves as the outdoor area of the geological exhibition of the Rýmařov City Museum. At Hrádek, a reconstruction of the foundations of a residential building in the town castle illustrates what the site was like at the end of the 13th century. The reconstruction includes an attached heating structure. This detail makes the depicted residential building more tangible than a mere floor plan.
Baroque, Church and Art
Kaple V Lipkách is considered a gem of North Moravian Baroque. From 2013 onward, it was opened not only to parishioners and pilgrims, but also to tourists and visitors to the city. Check current visiting options before your visit.
In St. Michael's Church, a simple Baroque rosary chapel was built in 1688 on the left side of the church hall. The chapel, altar and gallery are among its most original features. The altar oil painting depicts the Virgin Mary, Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine of Siena. It was created around 1725 by Jan Kryštof Handke, a distinguished artist from Janovice. The chapel's construction date and the painting's creation date thus mark two distinct points in time.
Museum and Annual Event
Another perspective is offered by the Rýmařov City Museum's external exhibition in the building of the HEDVA ČESKÝ BROKÁT textile factory. The Marie Kodovská Gallery is located in the artist's former home on Mlýnská Street. It displays both her works of art and objects that she used herself.
The Dřevařské, lesnické a myslivecké dny are held annually at Flemmichova zahrada. The program includes lumberjack competitions, demonstrations of modern forestry and timber-processing technology, hunting traditions, regional stalls, refreshments and an extensive accompanying program. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the dates in advance.
