Sedlnice: Nature, Cycling and Culture
Accommodation in Sedlnice
Sedlnice can be viewed from several angles: the Sedlnické sněženky Natural Monument represents a protected valley floodplain and a rich population of snowdrops, cycling route No. 6039 passes through the town, and the church, castle remains and Josefův dub offer historical and cultural points of reference. These themes may carry different weight when choosing a place to stay: nature, cycling and architectural history are all represented in Sedlnice, but appeal to different interests.
Natural Landscape and Josefův dub
The Sedlnické sněženky Natural Monument is protected; its cadastral area includes Sedlnice. In the broad valley floodplain of the Sedlnice, the protected area preserves scattered meadows and remnants of floodplain vegetation. One of its special features is a rich population of the common snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis). The natural theme therefore focuses on both a specific plant species and the floodplain landscape.
Another connection with nature in Sedlnice is Josefův dub, a commemorative tree more than a hundred years old. It can be reached by a field track that runs past the sports ground to the edge of the woods near the railway line. Local tradition links the tree to a poet who often went there, sat beneath it and wrote. Unlike the protected area, with its floodplain and plant population, this site draws attention to a single tree and the tradition associated with it.
Cycling on Route No. 6039
Cycling route No. 6039, “Rodištěm S. Freuda” (“Through S. Freud’s birthplace”), runs through Sedlnice. It is designated as an easy, 25-kilometre route and also passes through a protected landscape area. This gives the route several concrete points of reference: its name, number, length, difficulty rating and course through Sedlnice. When weighing up your interests, this route differs from the individual natural and cultural sites: the focus here is on the route’s length and designated difficulty, rather than the history of a building or a named tree.
Church, Tombs and Castle
The Church of St Michael is a distinctive landmark of Sedlnice. The new church was built in 1826 in the Baroque style. Renaissance tombs of Jan Sedlnický z Choltic and his wife Johanka z Limberka, both of whom died in 1573, are set into the side walls by the entrance. The church site thus brings together different historical periods: the Renaissance tombs and the construction of the new church in 1826. This makes it possible to understand the church both through its architectural history and through the tombs set into its walls.
Sedlnice Castle adds another dimension to the area’s architectural history, but with a different state of preservation: today, only a remnant of the former Baroque complex remains. While the church is a distinctive landmark, the castle is represented by its surviving remains. These sites therefore offer different points of reference for understanding local history: the church through its construction date, style and tombs, and the castle through the surviving traces of the former complex.
