Church and Local History

The first written mention of Životice U Nového Jičína dates from 1399. The original wooden Church of St. John dated from 1451 and burned down completely in 1898. The masonry Church of St. John the Baptist was built in 1902. These dates trace a sequence from the early mention of the town, through the wooden church, to the later church building.

A wooden altar from the church is dated to 1482 and is now in the Moravian Gallery in Brno. Its date falls between the original wooden church and the new building of 1902; its current location is Brno. Another historical trace is 92 Hungarian gold ducats from the 15th and 16th centuries, discovered during excavations in Životice in 1898. The year given is the year of their discovery, while the coins themselves date from earlier centuries.

Past community events also offer a glimpse into local life. At Children's Day on June 4, 2017, there was a fairy-tale meadow with entertaining activities for children of different ages. A notice from the same year describes the community day, “Den obce,” as being celebrated regularly in August.
