Kujavy: Nature Trail, Local History and Landscape
Accommodation in Kujavy
For a stay in Kujavy, you can weigh up several distinct interests: a nature trail with a stated walking time, a church with a dated construction history, memorial sites and a longer cycling route. This lets you decide whether you would like to get to know the place mainly on foot, by bike or through its historical traces.
On Foot and by Bike
The “Kujavská stezka poznání” is a 4 km nature trail; the walk takes about 60 minutes. This gives you a specific time frame for planning your day on this route. The “K Bíloveckému větrnému mlýnu” cycling route is different: it is 37 km long, and Kujavy is listed as its fourth stop. The route passes the Church of St Michael there. The nature trail therefore has an approximate walking time, while the cycling route is described by its total length and Kujavy’s position as a stop.
For additional orientation, Kujavy and the municipalities of the Poodří region use the “Na kole i pěšky” tourism app together. It offers maps, guides, cycling routes, sights and trip tips. If you would like to use the app to plan your trip, check its current availability beforehand.
Church and Local History
The present-day Church of St Michael was completed in the autumn of 1833 in the Empire style. It has been a cultural monument since 3 May 1958. The construction date and heritage status provide two different points of reference for the building’s history: the first indicates when it was built, while the second marks its later designation as a cultural monument.
The earliest written mention of Kujavy dates from 1293. Another historical point of reference is the primary school building: it was built in 1821 and has served as a school ever since. These dates therefore represent different aspects of local history—the municipality’s earliest written mention and the construction and use history of a specific building.
Memorial Sites
The war memorial stands at the junction of the Fulnek–Bílovec road and the municipal road towards Hladké Životice and Pustějov. Its inscription reads “SEDMNÁCT RUDOARMĚJCŮ”; the memorial also names Josef Beneš, Petr Liščinka, Alexandr Malý and Václav Kikal. The road directions locate the memorial, while the inscription and names show the specific people it commemorates.
A stone cross was restored, fitted with a new base and ceremonially consecrated in 2005. This date adds a clearly dated event from the recent past to the medieval and modern reference points in the history of the place.
Landscape and Events
The Děrenský potok forms the axis of the municipality of Kujavy and is near the Poodří Protected Landscape Area. Another landmark is the “Alej svobody´23”, a symbolic group of trees planted in 2023. It consists of 97 pear trees and 28 oaks. While the stream is described as the municipality’s axis, the avenue is notable for the precise number and composition of trees planted.
Kujavy’s plant herbarium also documents almost all the plant species that can be seen here. Together with the group of trees, it offers another nature-focused perspective on the place—from a named planting to the diversity of documented plant species.
The municipality organizes various events with local associations, including Municipal Day. Another culinary occasion is the “Kujavský gulášfest”; the municipality invited people to its third edition. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these dates, check the current event schedule beforehand.
