Lomnice: Cross-country skiing and local history
Accommodation in Lomnice
Lomnice lies in the Nízký Jeseník below Mount Slunečná. Cross-country ski trails, the Church of St. George and traces of the town’s history offer different starting points for planning a trip. If you are looking for a hotel in Lomnice, you can first consider whether you are travelling mainly for cross-country skiing, the town’s history or both.
Compare cross-country ski trails in Lomnice
Cross-country Route A is a loop of about 11 km with an elevation gain of 90 m. It leads into a wooded area at Kamenec and then along a ridge at the edge of the forest to Hospůdka Prima. Route B starts at Penzion Lomnický šenk. From there, it runs across meadows around Kamec into the forest and then over a ridge to Nová Pláň.
At about 19 km, Route B is around eight kilometres longer than the Route A loop; its elevation gain is 100 m rather than 90 m. This makes it possible to distinguish the two routes by length, course and destination. Winter trail grooming and conditions may change. Check both before setting out on your cross-country skiing trip.
The Church of St. George and local history
The Church of St. George is a single-nave masonry building dating from the mid-14th century and was extensively remodelled between 1603 and 1622. The parish is first mentioned in writing in 1351; the surviving core of the church was built in 1603. Lomnice and Tylov also appear in a papal document from 1351, while older records date back to around 1316. These details concern different historical aspects: the church building, the parish and the mention of the two towns.
Church services are held regularly, but their times may change. If you would like to attend a service, check the current schedule.
Museum and distinctive houses
The “Život na vsi” Museum focuses on small agricultural machines and tools. The collection was later expanded to include tools and products made by various craftsmen who lived and worked in the village. Its subject matter thus ranges from agricultural work to local crafts. If you are planning a museum visit, check the current visitor arrangements in advance.
Lomnice’s architectural character also includes old houses of the German lowland type, which were moved to the mountains and are significant as heritage buildings. Their history links a lowland building type with the mountainous area to which the houses were brought. In the “Park s cyklistickým hřištěm,” the track is intended for bicycles, including BMX and mountain bikes, as well as balance bikes.
Memorial sites and landscape
A prisoner-of-war cemetery lies near the Church of St. George above Lomnice. It is considered one of the largest in Moravia and has a dignified memorial. A monument in the cemetery in Lomnice commemorates the victims of the prisoner-of-war camp from 1940 to 1945.
Lomnice’s cadastral area is also part of the area covered by the Údolí Bystřice Nature Park in the Rýmařovsko region. Another named natural feature is the Lomnická lípa, listed as an individual tree in the cadastral area of Lomnice u Rýmařova. Together with its location below Slunečná, this regional setting offers a different side of a stay from the historic sites or cross-country ski trails.
