Syřenov: Castle Ruins, Views and Cross-Country Skiing
Accommodation in Syřenov
Syřenov lies on the upper reaches of the Černá River, southeast of Lomnice nad Popelkou. Two distinct focuses stand out when planning a trip: excursions to castle ruins and viewpoints, and, in winter, access to the Lomnická magistrála cross-country ski route. If you are planning a hotel stay, considering the season and your preferred activity can help you decide whether Syřenov is the right destination for you.
Kumburk Castle and the View
Kumburk Castle is a ruin with a viewing platform at the summit of the mountain of the same name. At 643 m, Kumburk is one of the two prominent hills in the area around Syřenov. From the summit viewpoint, you can see the Jičín region, the Podkrkonoší region, the Giant Mountains and nearby parts of the Bohemian Paradise. The ruin and platform share the summit as a destination; the view takes in several named landscape regions at once.
Walking Trail and Route with Multiple Destinations
You can reach Syřenov by train or bus; from there, a 3 km yellow-marked walking trail leads to the ruins of Kumburk Castle. If you would like to link several places on one route, you can plan the “From Syřenov over three hills” route. It connects Kumburk, Bradlec, Kyje and Tábor via the Golden Trail in Bohemian Paradise. The route ends in Lomnice nad Popelkou; from there, you can take the train back to Syřenov. This offers a contrast between a visit to a single summit and a route with several named stops and a different endpoint.
Cross-Country Skiing on the Lomnická magistrála
In winter, you can join the Lomnická magistrála in Syřenov. Its main route follows the Golden Trail in Bohemian Paradise and offers views of the Giant Mountains, the Jizera Mountains and Bohemian Paradise. The main circular route is 21 km long; including the secondary trails, the network covers more than 35 km. These figures describe different distances: the main loop on the one hand, and the entire network, including the secondary trails, on the other. When planning, you can therefore choose between the loop and the larger trail network.
Other Castles and Local Landmarks
Bradlec Castle dates back to the 13th century and stands on a volcanic basalt hill at an elevation of 557 m. The two castles are therefore distinguished by different notable features: Kumburk is associated with its summit platform and named distant views, while Bradlec is notable for its historical period and basalt hill. Syřenov is also home to the Kampelík House, which bears a commemorative plaque. It adds another local landmark within the village to the castles.
The route linking several places offers a different travel plan from a visit to a single summit.
