Holenice: Quarry, Valley and Hunting Lodge History
Accommodation in Holenice
Holenice is located in the Český ráj area; the municipality is part of the Český ráj UNESCO Global Geopark. Two perspectives can be helpful when choosing a destination: the specific features of the place and the wider natural and cultural area. Numerous natural and cultural monuments, historic places and geological attractions are concentrated in a small area of Český ráj. Here, the valley around the Boučnice, a geological site of national importance and the history of a hunting lodge come together.
Valley, Stream and Holenický Quarry
Holenice lies in a picturesque valley on the Boučnice stream, between Lomnice nad Popelkou, Rovensko pod Troskami and Libuň. The road from Veselá offers a sweeping view of Holenice and the houses along the stream. Its location between the three places mentioned situates Holenice within the wider valley; the view from the road from Veselá looks directly towards the village and the houses along the stream. Together, these offer different perspectives on the landscape.
On the northern edge of the municipality, Holenický Quarry lies in a forest, at a sharp bend in the road from Veselá and on the right bank of the Boučnice. The quarry is a geological and palaeontological site of national importance. For travellers interested in the history of the Earth, this designation is a precise point of reference. At the same time, the quarry stands apart as a geological focus from the general landscape of the valley and stream.
The Hunting Lodge and Local History
A manor farm once stood on the site of the hunting lodge; a wooden hunting lodge was built there later. Count Aehrenthal had the present-day brick hunting lodge built in 1870 for 6,000 gulden. The former hunting lodge is considered Holenice’s oldest building and once belonged to the Hrubá Skála estate. The date 1870 refers to the brick building, not to the original farm or the earlier wooden hunting lodge. This makes it possible to place the construction history in context without conflating its different phases.
The history of Holenice also includes domestic garnet grinding, which was once one of the residents’ main sources of income. Another historical reference is the year 1628: at that time, the village passed to Albrecht von Wallenstein, who incorporated it into the Hruboskalsko estate. These details offer two different ways into the village’s history—the residents’ former work and the village’s historical affiliation. Together with the hunting lodge’s construction history, they give the place a historical dimension that extends beyond its landscape.
