Accommodation in Vichova Nad Jizerou
Víchová nad Jizerou combines a hillside setting above the Jizera valley with historical and artistic connections. When planning your trip, you can consider the landscape, architectural history, and a trail associated with landscape painter František Kaván as distinct highlights.
Landscape and Nature
The municipality stretches from the Jizera valley up the slopes, offering views of the western Krkonoše panorama. There is an elevation difference of 200 metres between the lower and upper parts of Víchová nad Jizerou, giving the settlement a distinct vertical layout. The municipality does not fall within a single zone of KRNAP either: some parts lie in the third zone, while others are in the protected zone.
The two protected notable trees in Víchová nad Jizerou are the Danehlova lípa and Lípa na Koutě. The municipality is also home to important sites with protected plant species, including burnt-tip orchid, broad-leaved marsh orchid, Turk’s cap lily, and two-leaved platanthera. The trees and plants add specific nature-related points of interest to the landscape, which can be considered separately when exploring the area.
Hrádek and Local History
One medieval trace of the area’s history is the Hrádek fortification at V Bučí. It lies above the municipal library in Víchová nad Jizerou, in the direction of Danehlova lípa. Pottery dates the site from the 13th century to the beginning of the 17th century. Today it is badly damaged: the inner platform has been partially removed, and traces of an artificially created moat are still visible. Its location, dating, and surviving condition give history-minded travellers several points of reference for understanding the site.
The protected farmhouse No. 85 is part of the folk architecture of Víchová nad Jizerou. The bell towers are also spread across the local districts: each of the three districts has its own bell tower. Academic landscape painter František Kaván was born in Víchovská Lhota, a district of Víchová nad Jizerou. The area’s cultural connections thus range from the protected farmhouse and bell towers to landscape painting.
Víchovský Trail and Kaván’s Landscape Gallery
The 11-kilometre Víchovský Trail is marked in red, yellow, and blue, follows wide paths, and is also suitable for cyclists. Its length, markings, and trail conditions give you practical criteria for deciding whether it fits your plans. Along the route is the permanent landscape gallery “Zarostlá místa Kavánových obrazů,” featuring twelve reproductions of Kaván’s works in wooden frames. The paintings give the trail a direct connection to the landscape art of the artist who was born in Víchovská Lhota.
The trail can be divided into two sections, and local public transport can be used for this. If you plan to split the route, check the timetables in advance. On hot days, the Jizera at its confluence with the Jizerka in Horní Sytová is also recommended as a place to cool off. This gives you the choice of a marked trail with a cultural connection and a separate, specifically named spot for cooling off in hot weather.
