Líšný between the Jizera and cultural heritage

Líšný offers several different reasons to choose it as a travel destination: sacred sandstone architecture, marked trails along the Jizera and an annual pétanque tournament held in early August. This combination helps you weigh up a history-focused stay, outdoor activities or a trip centred on a fixed event date.

Landscape and local context

Líšný is part of the Maloskalsko Nature Park, established in 1997. Since 2002, Líšný has also been part of the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area. These two designations help you understand the area’s landscape context; specific routes add another dimension.

Sacred architecture and local history

Near the Líšný railway stop is Kalvárie, a unique example of small-scale sacred sandstone architecture. It dates to 1807 and consists of a cross and figures of the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist. Kalvárie was originally polychrome, or multicoloured.

The late Baroque Chapel of St John of Nepomuk was consecrated in 1777. It is a useful landmark for combining architectural history with route planning: the yellow hiking trail from Líšný to Železný Brod runs alongside the chapel.

Another sacred monument is the cast-iron cross with the Corpus Christi. It stands on a stone sandstone pedestal, whose reliefs depict the Virgin Mary, Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Joseph. The cross was made in 1842 at the expense of Josef and Antonín Novotný of Líšný.

The two cross monuments can be distinguished by their figures: Mary and John are part of the Kalvárie ensemble, while the pedestal of the cast-iron cross bears reliefs of Mary, Anthony and Joseph.

The monument to the victims of the First World War was erected in 1922. It now stands in the municipal cemetery, where it is the cemetery’s central landmark. The monument has been moved several times. The Líšný railway stop is also part of the area’s history: it opened on 1 June 1924.

The dates establish a clear sequence: the chapel’s consecration in 1777, Kalvárie in 1807, the cast-iron cross in 1842 and the war memorial in 1922. This makes it possible to distinguish sacred buildings from later commemoration by date.

Trails, events and amenities

The Greenway Jizera cycle path passes through Líšný. The marked cycle route No. 17, called Greenway Jizera, runs along the Jizera. It can be used by bicycle, inline skates, scooter or on foot; some sections can be travelled by boat. By contrast, the yellow hiking trail beside the chapel is identified as the route from Líšný to Železný Brod.

A recurring event is Líšný OPEN, an annual pétanque tournament for teams of three held at the beginning of August. If you are planning your stay around the tournament, check the dates for the relevant edition.

Galerka Líšný offers a bistro, boat hire on the Jizera, scooter hire, a small gallery and affordable accommodation. Its listed amenities range from food and activities to art and overnight stays; the boat hire is specifically on the Jizera.
