Radčice: Mountain Views, Hiking Route and Slate History
Accommodation in Radčice
Radčice combines mountain views with a hiking route that runs through the village and the history of roofing slate. This offers different focuses for planning a trip: landscape, hiking trail, and geological and architectural traces.
Views and Hiking Route
From the Draha viewpoint, locally called Bučka, the view extends to the Krkonoše Mountains and part of the Jizera Mountains. To the south, the view also takes in Kozákov and Suché skály. The viewpoint thus connects two mountain ranges—with only part of the Jizera Mountains explicitly in view—with two other named landscape features.
The Černostudniční hřeben hiking route runs through Radčice. It leads from Berany, at the foot of the Jizera Mountains, through the village toward Kozákov, the highest peak in the Bohemian Paradise. Berany and Kozákov represent different landscape features; Radčice lies along the route between them. For trip planning, this offers a different perspective on the village from the one at Draha: the route emphasizes direction and passage, while the viewpoint highlights the named sights.
Slate, Rocks and Fossils
The Radčice–Jirkov–Jílové site comprises a group of roofing-slate quarries that have been abandoned, become overgrown and, in some cases, flooded. The age of the slate-bearing rocks is estimated at 470 to 480 million years. Within the site, the Tlukačka quarry is one of the places where trace fossils, mollusk fossils and trilobites have been found.
The site refers to the group of quarries, while Tlukačka is a specifically named fossil locality within it; the age estimate, in turn, applies to the rocks. Former extraction, fossil finds and the age of the rocks can thus be considered related, but distinct, aspects of the geological context.
History and Architectural Forms
The first written mention of the village dates to 1543. Roofing slate from the Radčice quarries was used, among other things, on historic buildings throughout Bohemia. Local extraction was therefore connected to the wider use of the material across Bohemia. Radčice’s oldest log cabins were arranged in a horseshoe shape. This describes the cabins’ arrangement in relation to one another and complements the written date with an architectural perspective on the village. Together, a dated historical record, a specific settlement layout and the wider use of locally quarried material provide different perspectives.
Trips in Different Seasons
Radčice is a starting point for many trips in both summer and winter. Small ponds remain where the former quarries once stood and often serve as natural swimming spots in summer. If you plan to visit the ponds, check access and safety on site. The seasonal distinction is useful: the area serves as a base for trips in both summer and winter, while the ponds are frequently used as swimming spots specifically in summer.
