Smržovka lies in the Jizera Mountains recreation area and is a centre for summer and winter tourism. When choosing a hotel, it is therefore helpful to first decide what you want to focus on: would you like to visit museums and see historic architecture, go for walks or plan winter activities? Local attractions range from collections and sights to trails and snow-dependent sports opportunities.

Nature, walks and trails

Rare trees from several regions of the world grow in Městský lesopark Smržovka. Their exact origins can no longer be determined, however. The park is a popular place for walks and individual leisure activities. DiscGolfPark Smržovka offers a different kind of outdoor activity with its nine-hole course.

One named hiking route is Kolem Smržovky. It starts at Smržovka railway station, leads to the Černá Studnice viewpoint and returns to Smržovka via the toboggan run. The starting point, viewpoint and return route are clearly identified. This makes it easy to distinguish the route from a walk in the park: it connects the railway station with a viewpoint and then leads back via the toboggan run.

Museums and architecture

Muzeum místní historie a výstavní síň Smržovka is housed in the rooms of Smržovka Castle. Another collection is on display at Muzeum panenek Smržovka: the exhibition includes 200 German, Russian, Spanish and Czech dolls, as well as other toys. The range therefore extends from local history and exhibitions to dolls and toys.

Muzeum obrněné techniky Smržovka currently comprises around 30 exhibits. Driving demonstrations and reconstructions of combat operations take place on its grounds, which cover around 1.5 hectares. The collection, demonstrations and reconstructions offer a different focus from the doll or local history exhibitions.

The Church of St Michael the Archangel is a late Baroque landmark of the wider area and is considered an important architectural monument in the Jablonec region. It is open for individual visits during significant city events. If a visit is important to your trip, plan around these events.

The traditional production of costume jewellery and glass has also been preserved in Smržovka to this day. Together with the museums and the church, it forms part of the town’s cultural profile and adds to the options for travellers who want to explore local craft traditions as well as outdoor activities.

Comparing winter activities

The cross-country skiing area in Smržovka is around three kilometres long and is groomed for skating and two classic tracks. The mechanically groomed cross-country ski trails connect to other routes. These details about grooming and connections help distinguish cross-country skiing as a trail-based activity from downhill skiing and tobogganing.

The Filip ski area has a 500-metre downhill run with a vertical drop of 100 metres; its operation depends on snow and climate conditions. By contrast, Přírodní sáňkařská dráha Smržovka is an almost four-kilometre natural toboggan run on groomed forest paths. It runs from the Černá Studnice viewpoint to the Filip ski lift; its use depends on snow conditions. The stated lengths and conditions provide different points of reference for planning cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and tobogganing.

Choose your stay based on your travel interests

Individual visits to the church are linked to significant city events. Snow and climate conditions are relevant for downhill skiing and the toboggan run. Take these differences into account when choosing your destination and deciding what to focus on during your stay.
