Cetnov lies on the Skalka Reservoir along the Ohře. For travelers, the village brings together the riverside landscape and a long archaeological and historical past. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Cetnov, the landscape, cycling connections, and local history can help you decide which aspects of the village matter to your plans.

Cetnov between the Ohře and the Skalka Reservoir

The Skalka Reservoir is on the Ohře, and Cetnov lies on its banks. After the area was flooded, the water reached the edge of the village. Cetnov, formerly also called Zettendorf, originally stood high above the Ohře. The landscape therefore brings together two distinct features: the village’s former elevated position above the river and the water that reached the village after the flooding. This contrast connects the historical setting with the later transformation brought about by the reservoir. The reservoir is used mainly for recreation; its banks are mostly lined with holiday settlements. Cetnov is therefore part of a riverside area whose use is shaped primarily by the reservoir’s recreational character.

Cycling around Cetnov

There are two distinct cycling routes to consider. From the junction near Klest, a 1.5-kilometre spur of cycle route 2063 leads to Cetnov. This describes the spur to the village. Cycle route 257 is listed as following the shoreline from Bříza through Cetnov to Skalka. While the information about route 2063 connects Cetnov with the junction near Klest, route 257 lists a sequence of places along the shore. Cetnov can therefore be reached via a spur from Klest or placed along the route between Bříza and Skalka. Check current local conditions before riding cycle route 257.

Archaeological traces

The Cetnov–Vlčí vrch site lies northeast of Cetnov, on the left bank of the Ohře. It is registered as an immovable cultural monument and is regarded as a prehistoric settlement and burial site with archaeological traces. Cetnov is also one of the polycultural archaeological sites on the northern shore of the Skalka Reservoir that were inhabited from the Late Paleolithic to the Middle Ages. Here, “polycultural” refers to several cultural-historical periods; the settlement was therefore not limited to a single era. A specific find from Cetnov is a vessel from the Late Merovingian period. Together, the traces of settlement stretching far back in time and the find from a named period offer different insights into the village’s archaeological history.

First written record and fortification site

The first written mention of Cetnov dates to 1221. This written record is distinct from the archaeological traces: it marks an early mention of the village, while the finds attest to a much longer history of settlement. The former fortification site is also part of the village’s history. After the village fire of 1892, the fortification tower was dismantled and has not survived. An old well with a granite basin and the year 1510 inscribed on it remained at the former site after the fire. Check the well’s current condition locally if you plan to include this historical site in your itinerary.
