Neuberg: Castle Ruins and Culture
Accommodation in Neuberg
Neuberg offers travelers several points of interest: Podhradí’s location in the Ašský výběžek, the history of the castle and Green Route 1.0. These topics address different questions: Where is the town, which historic traces have survived, and which named route runs from Podhradí via mineral springs to Hazlov?
Landscape and location
Podhradí lies in the Ašský výběžek, in the valley of the Ašský potok and toward the border with neighboring Germany. The town is situated at an elevation of 562 m. The valley, watercourse, elevation and direction of the border describe different aspects of the town’s location. The castle ruins lie 3.5 km north-northeast of Aš, on a rock above the left bank of the Ašský potok. For orientation, it is important to distinguish the town’s location from the castle’s: 562 m is the elevation of Podhradí, while the distance and compass direction place the ruins relative to Aš.
Neuberg Castle: history and surviving details
Neuberg Castle was built around the beginning of the 13th century. After a major fire in 1610, the castle in Podhradí no longer served as the main center of the Zedtwitz family’s lordship in the Ascher Land. These two historical facts provide different context: the approximate date of construction and the later change in its role within the lordship. Of the Upper Castle, only the front section of the wall and the windows remain. The original feeding troughs survive in the former stable of the Upper Castle. The surviving parts of the Upper Castle and the feeding troughs point to different aspects of the former structure: visible architectural features on the one hand, and a detail from its use as a stable on the other. The focus is thus on the castle’s history and specific surviving details.
Church of the Good Shepherd
The Church of the Good Shepherd is a protected cultural monument. The altar, made by M. Zeitler, dates from 1710. These are two distinct points of reference: protected status classifies the church as a building, while the year dates a particular altar. If you are interested in sacred art, the altar provides a precise point of reference for art history. The building and its furnishings remain distinct aspects, rather than one date being applied to both.
Green Route 1.0
Green Route 1.0 runs from Podhradí via mineral springs to Hazlov. For travelers who want to plan their stay around a hike or a route, it specifies a concrete itinerary with a starting point, an intermediate reference point and a destination. Unlike the castle and church, the route focuses on the landscape. If you are more interested in the route than in a single architectural or artistic feature, it becomes a distinct focus for planning. Check local conditions before setting out.
