Střezetice offers a historical focus for travelers interested in the Battle of Hradec Králové. The “Pomník jezdecké srážky u Střezetic” monument is located near the town on the historic battlefield. Other memorial sites commemorate those who fell in 1866. There are also specific route details for active exploration: Cycle Route 4286 passes through Střezetice, while a yellow-marked hiking trail begins at Dlouhé Dvory railway station. Memorial sites, the cycling route, and hiking destinations appeal to different travel interests and can be considered separately when planning.

Memorial Sites from 1866

The “Pomník jezdecké srážky u Střezetic” monument commemorates soldiers and horses who fell in a skirmish on July 3, 1866, as part of the Battle of Hradec Králové. Its location near Střezetice on the historic battlefield gives the commemoration its setting. The monument was unveiled on July 2, 2016, on the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Hradec Králové. The dates serve different purposes: July 3, 1866, marks the skirmish, while July 2, 2016, is the date of the unveiling.

The monument to Alexandr Baron von Bethmann, with its sandstone pyramid, offers a different form of memorial. Its inscribed plaque is in Czech and German. It stands about 300 meters east of Střezetice, in a group of four monuments in an open field. Its approximate distance, position within the group, and open-field setting are useful for orientation. The site’s history is also part of the story: in 1894, the monument was moved from a field to its present location.

Graves and Individual Remembrance

“Hroby Obětí války 1866” is a sandstone pyramid marking the grave of 30 Austrian and Prussian soldiers. They fell on July 3, 1866; the monument is southeast of Dlouhé Dvory. The tomb of Edmund von Salemfels offers a personal form of remembrance: it commemorates the Austrian first lieutenant of the 9th Uhlan Regiment. A polished granite pillar bearing a bronze coat of arms stands in front of a matching grave slab. Thus, a communal grave for 30 fallen soldiers and the remembrance of a named officer differ in whom they commemorate.

Another relocation is part of the history of the monument to Romuald von Dobrucki. It was moved from a field between Horní Dohalice and Dlouhé Dvory, beside the railway line, to its present location.

Exploring by Bicycle and on Foot

Cycle Route 4286 passes through Střezetice toward Všestary. Along the way, there is a stop at the “Pomník padlých koní” monument. The route thus identifies a specific point of interest for travelers who want to explore Střezetice by bicycle.

For hikers, a yellow-marked trail leads from Dlouhé Dvory railway station to Rozběřice and onward to Chlum, the center of the 1866 battlefield. Dlouhé Dvory railway station serves as Střezetice’s rail connection. Střezetice and Dlouhé Dvory are also part of an educational trail.

The cycling route and hiking trail differ in their stated destinations: the cycling route heads toward Všestary and includes a stop at “Pomník padlých koní”; the yellow-marked trail leads from the railway station to Rozběřice and onward to Chlum. As local route conditions and markings may change, check the route and its markings before setting out.
