Ohnišťany: Church Art and Fortress History
Accommodation in Ohnišťany
When looking for a hotel destination, Ohnišťany can be considered through two specific themes: church and architectural history, and a cycling route that passes through the town. The historical details concern specific works of art, building phases, and remains; the cycling route is described in terms of its length, terrain, and path types. This can help you decide whether the cultural attractions or the route’s characteristics better suit your travel plans.
Church, Art, and Listed Monument
The pillar with the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk was declared a cultural monument by the Ministry of Culture in 2005. The Ministry described the statue as a high-quality work of East Bohemian Baroque sculpture. Its protected status and art-historical classification should be distinguished: the designation applies to the pillar with the statue, while the characterization as Baroque sculpture applies to the artwork.
Two dated events can be distinguished in the church’s history. The painting on the main altar dates from 1871 and was created by academic painter Alois Sajfrt from Vrchlabí. Vrchlabí identifies the painter’s origin; the work itself is located on the main altar in the church in Ohnišťany. In 1910, Kadlík, the church’s patron at the time and owner of Podlesí, commissioned a comprehensive renovation of the church interior. After a fire, the church was rebuilt in its present form. The dates refer to different events: 1871 is the date of the altarpiece, while 1910 is the date of the interior renovation.
Fortress, Farmstead, and Local History
The fortress is documented as early as 1318. Its moat was fed by a stream from the former settlement of Nové Ohnišťany. The plot on which the former fortress stood is still known as “Zámeček.”
The farmstead is another part of the town’s history. Albrecht z Valdštejna had it built around 1624–1626. Remains of the original farmstead’s walls can still be seen on stables Nos. 102 and 116. The fortress and the farmstead belong to different periods: the fortress is documented in 1318, while the farmstead was built around 1624–1626. The construction period is approximate; the wall remains, by contrast, are associated with two specific stable buildings.
Transport History and Cycling Route
The history of transport can also be placed in a specific period: the railway in the Ohnišťany area was built between 1867 and 1870. The line runs from Chlumec nad Cidlinou via Stará Paka to Trutnov. The construction dates place the railway in the 19th century and add to the earlier time periods associated with the fortress and farmstead.
The 32 km Kladruby nad Labem–Ohnišťany cycling route passes through Ohnišťany. It crosses flat countryside with little elevation gain and uses Class III roads and paved local paths. These details describe different aspects of the route: its length gives its overall distance, the low elevation profile describes the terrain, and the road and path types describe the surfaces. The two surface details also distinguish Class III roads from paved local paths, rather than reducing the entire route to a single type of path. If you are looking for a hotel destination with cycling opportunities, you can compare the route’s length, landscape, and path types with your own plans.
