Vysoký Chlumec lies in the picturesque landscape of Střední Povltaví, which is part of the Toulava tourist region. Cultural and historical themes offer several distinct points of interest: the medieval castle seat, the chapel in Vápenice, the history of brewing and an open-air museum. For your planning, it is worth considering the different visitor options separately: the open-air museum offers two types of tour, while visits to the brewing exhibition can be arranged in advance through the local information centre. Check the latest information on tours and event dates before travelling.

Castle Seat and Chapels

The castle seat of Vysoký Chlumec was probably built in the second half of the 14th century by Purkart Strnad z Janovic. Vysoký Chlumec Castle is not open to the public, so consider it a historical point of interest, not a public visitor attraction. At the eastern end of Vysoký Chlumec, in the settlement of Vápenice, stands the Chapel of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Chapel of St. Anne is also located near Vysoký Chlumec. It was the first work of the local master builder František Holan.

Vysoký Chlumec Open-Air Museum

Residential, agricultural, technical and smaller religious buildings are gradually being relocated to the natural grounds in the stream valley. Indoor exhibitions illustrate rural living and farming. The different types of buildings and exhibitions thus highlight various aspects of rural life. Visitors can see 24 buildings in total; 14 of them are accessible through indoor or special exhibitions. The number of buildings visible and the number accessible through exhibitions are therefore not the same.

The museum offers two visitor options: a self-guided tour and a guided tour. As tour options may change with museum operations, check the latest visitor information before travelling. This will help you include the tour that suits you in your plans without treating the two options as interchangeable.

Brewing and Events

The brewing exhibition focuses on a different historical theme. It documents that the first written references to beer brewing in Vysoký Chlumec date from 1466. Exhibits include old beer bottles, coopering tools and work, labels, beer mugs and beer mats. The exhibition thus brings together an early written reference to brewing with objects related to the craft and beer culture. The exhibits may change. Visits to the exhibition can be arranged in advance through the local information centre; arrange your visit with them well ahead of time.
