Krepenice: Krčín Fortress and Routes
Accommodation in Krepenice
Krčín Fortress and Visiting
Krčín Fortress is the historical focal point of Křepenice. The Renaissance fortress was completed in 1584 and is privately owned. Visits are possible by arrangement with the owners. As access arrangements may change, it is advisable to confirm the appointment before visiting. This makes it possible to include a visit to the fortress as a separate item in your travel plans. In addition to cultural heritage, cycling and hiking trails are distinct trip-planning topics.
Architecture and Local History
Krčín Fortress preserves a central palace with remnants of original murals featuring mythological themes. It also has a perimeter wall, two gates and three tower-like corner bastions. Another architectural feature in Křepenice is the chapel bell tower, whose ground plan takes the shape of half an irregular octagon. The protected components of Jakub Krčín’s fortress complex include the main fortress building, the northwest building with a gate, the southwest and southeast buildings, the so-called sheepfold, the perimeter wall with the east gate, the northern farm building, the access bridge and all plots within the complex.
Křepenice is mentioned in a deed of donation to Břevnov Monastery dated 1045; the deed is described as a 13th-century forgery. The year 1045 therefore dates the document, while 1584 is the completion year of the Renaissance Krčín Fortress. Thus, the early mention of the village in a document identified as a forgery and the later construction date of the fortress are two distinct historical reference points.
Cycling and Hiking Trails
Two regional cycling routes are described with different details. Cycling Route 301 connects Křepenice with Krásná Hora nad Vltavou and is 23 kilometres long. Cycling Route 8132 runs from Vojkov to Křepenice. For Route 301, both the connection and the route length are specified; Route 8132 is described by its two endpoints. This comparison helps match the route numbers to the connections described.
A blue-marked hiking trail passes through Křepenice. Nearby, the Drbákov-Albertovy skály nature trail runs for seven kilometres, has eleven stops and offers views of the Vltava Valley. A description from 2023 also mentions a blue-marked route from Krčín Fortress that reaches the edge of the 61-hectare Drbákov–Albertovy skály National Nature Reserve in under three kilometres. For comparing hiking options, the eleven stops along the seven-kilometre nature trail can therefore be considered alongside the shorter connection from the fortress to the reserve’s edge. From the Libešov hills, there are views of Křepenice and the surrounding area. This makes it possible to distinguish the valley views from the nature trail from the view of the village from Libešov. Forests cover 30% of Křepenice’s area. This figure complements the specific trails and views with an overview of the landscape.
